
Monsters Fall 5-2 to Rockford, Win Streak Snapped

The win streak of the Lake Erie Monsters (12-9-2-2) was snapped at six games as the Monsters were handed a 5-2 defeat by the Midwest Division-leading Rockford IceHogs (18-7-2-1) Saturday before a Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 8,988. Bruno Gervais and Markus Lauridsen scored for the Monsters, who also had their point streak snap at eight games. The Monsters are back in action Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Milwaukee.
Rockford took a 2-0 lead in the first 4:46 of the game on goals from Joakim Nordstrom at the 1:03 mark, and Jeremy Morin, who scored on a Rockford power play at 4:46 of the first period. Bruno Gervais answered for the Monsters, cutting Rockford's lead to 2-1 at the 6:29 mark of the first period. Mike Sgarbossa entered the Rockford zone, paused, and found Gervais for on a perfect pass in front of the net. Gervais flipped the puck over the left shoulder of Rockford goalie Mac Carruth for the finish. Andrew Agozzino also assisted on the Monsters goal.
Following a scramble in front of the Monsters net, Nordstrom poked in a loose puck to regain the two-goal lead for Rockford, making the score 3-1 at 1:11 of the middle frame.
Markus Lauridsen scored his fourth goal of the season to cut the Monsters deficit to 3-2 at 7:54 of the third period. Max Noreau made a series of moves up the right side of the ice into the offensive zone, and found a streaking Lauridsen in the high slot. Lauridsen wasted no time, wristing a shot past Carruth for the Monsters second goal tonight.
Nordstrom completed his hat trick for Rockford, making the score 4-2 at the 13:52 mark of the third period when he cut across the top of the right circle and into the slot before sending a shot top shelf past Monsters goalie Sami Aittokallio. Brandon Mashinter added an empty-net goal at 17:54 of the third period to give Rockford a 5-2 lead.
Aittokallio stopped 31 of 35 shots in the loss; he is now 5-2-1. Carruth is 2-0-0 after the win for Rockford; he stopped 25 of 27.
The Monsters host Milwaukee at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The game airs live on AM 1420 "ËThe Answer'.
