Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins scored in the closing minutes of the third period to force overtime, but would fall in the shootout to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, 2-1, on Saturday at PPL Center.

The Phantoms came out with the early jump and went ahead, 1-0, just 75 seconds into the game. Brett Hextall fired a hard slapshot from the right circle that Penguins goalie Matt Murray turned aside with the right pad, but the rebound came to a wide-open Petr Straka, who deposited the puck into the open net.

After the early tally, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton settled in and racked up the shots on Lehigh Valley's goaltender Anthony Stolarz, outshooting the Phantoms, 28-17, through two periods of play.

The next goal would not come until the final 2:08 of regulation on the Penguins' 39th shot of the game. Gathering a loose puck in the left corner of the Phantoms zone, Jayson Megna whipped a pass toward the crease that ricocheted off of Jean-Sebastien Dea and through the legs of Stolarz to tie the score at one. Dea's seventh goal of the season would send the match into overtime, where neither squad was able to net the game-winner.

In the first shootout of their pro careers, both rookie netminders saw the opposition find the back of the net twice over the first three rounds. Megna was denied by Stolarz in the top half of round four before Nick Cousins beat Murray with a wrist shot inside the near post to give Lehigh Valley the victory.

Murray made 23 saves on 24 shots through overtime as his record goes to 5-4-2 on the season. Stolarz stopped 44-of-45 for the Phantoms. Both teams went scoreless in two power play opportunities.

The Penguins close out their three-game weekend on Sunday, Dec. 14 as they take on the Hershey Bears on home ice at 4:05 p.m.
