
'Dogs Fall to Amerks 4-3 in OT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Rochester Americans (10-16-1-0) defenceman Chad Ruhwedel scored on the power play 5:46 into overtime to lead his club past the Hamilton Bulldogs (12-10-5-0) 4-3 on Saturday evening at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y.
Rochester forward Phil Varone got the Amerks on the board first at 6:29 of the opening period, with assists from forwards Johan Larsson and Mikhail Grigorenko.
Less than three minutes later, Hamilton forward T.J. Hensick stripped a Rochester defender of the puck, found forward Drayson Bowman on a two-on-one rush and Bowman buried his fourth goal of the season past Americans goaltender Andrey Makarov. Defenceman Davis Drewiske was credited with a second assist.
At 14:26 of the first period, on the power play, Bulldogs forward Christian Thomas one-timed a pass from forward Charles Hudon past Makarov for his seventh goal of the season to put the 'Dogs ahead 2-1. Defenceman Greg Pateryn had a second assist.
Just 93 seconds into the second period, Hamilton forward Gabriel Dumont tipped a Pateryn point shot past Makarov for his seventh goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. Forward Daniel Carr had a second assist on the play.
At 4:07 of the middle frame, Americans forward Luke Adam swiped a loose puck in the crease past Bulldogs goaltender Joey MacDonald to make it a 3-2 game. Forwards Zac Dalpe and Matt Ellis had assists.
Six minutes into the third period, Dalpe tipped home a point shot by defenceman Jake McCabe to tie the game, 3-3. Larsson had a second assist on the power play goal.
Ruhwedel's overtime game winner was assisted by Larsson and Grigorenko.
Joey MacDonald made 38 stops on 42 shots for the Bulldogs in the loss, while Makarov made 31 saves on 34 shots for the Americans in the win.
Hamilton went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Rochester was 2-for-3 with a man advantage.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 17 when they'll host the St. John's IceCaps at FirstOntario Centre at 7:30 p.m.
