Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - The Carolina Mudcats (7-1) used a seven-run fourth inning to come from behind and take down the Down East Wood Ducks (4-4), 7-5 Saturday night at Five County Stadium. Carolina has won four in a row after the Wood Ducks took the series opener back on Tuesday.
Down East jumped out front to a 3-0 lead early with a big third inning two-out rally. Arturo Disla had an RBI single that was later followed by a two-run base hit by Danyer Cueva surrendered by Mudcats starter Josh Timmerman.
The Mudcats' offense quickly woke up in the bottom of the fourth. Singles from Tayden Hall and Daniel Guilarte coupled with a Luis Castillo walk loaded the bases with no outs against Wood Ducks starter Josh Trentadue (L, 1-1). David Garcia reached on an infield single that scored two runs after Trentadue threw it away trying to get the lead runner at the plate. Moments later, Kay-Lan Nicasia and Yhoswar Garcia lofted back-to-back sacrifice flies to give Carolina the lead to 4-3.
The Mudcats was not done, however. Miguel Briceno and Juan Baez both beat out infield singles with the latter forcing a poor throw that moved both up to scoring position. That set the table for Yophery Rodriguez, who drove a fly ball to deep center that hit the wall for a two-run triple. Rodriguez later scored on a wild pitch to cap off the seven-run fourth inning.
Jesus Rivero (W, 2-0) shined in relief over the middle innings as the righty went four, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six. Jeison Pena took over for him in the seventh and recorded four easy outs before Bayden Root (SV, 1) shut the door for the save in the ninth.
The Mudcats will wrap up their series with the Wood Ducks on Saturday afternoon for Five County Family Sunday presented by WakeMed, which features $7 box seat tickets and postgame catch on the field for all fans. RHP Yorman Galindez gets the start for Carolina opposite LHP Luis Valdez. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
