Woodpeckers Held Scoreless in First Loss to Charleston
April 13, 2024 - Carolina League (CarL)
Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (4-2) were held to just four hits on a windy and rainy Thursday night at Segra Stadium and suffered their first loss of the homestand, 2-0 to the Charleston RiverDogs (3-3).
Charleston scored both runs in the first two innings of the game. Angel Mateo slugged a solo home run onto the left field berm in the first inning, and Cristopher Barete connected for a sacrifice fly in the second for a 2-0 lead.
It was all zeros for Woodpeckers pitching the rest of the way. Ben Petschke took over in the third for Jackson Nezuh and tossed 2.1 hitless innings. Ethan Pecko entered in the sixth and allowed just three total baserunners over four scoreless, holding the 2-0 deficit intact. It marks the second straight night that the Woodpeckers bullpen did not surrender a run.
The Woodpeckers had multiple chances to end the shutout, but ultimately went 0-for-7 at the plate with runners in scoring position. In the fifth, Fayetteville loaded the bases on a Kenni Gomez single and walks from Waner Luciano and Oliver Carrillo. Charleston starter Gary Gill Hill escaped the pressure by striking out three straight hitters and stranding the bases loaded.
The six-game home series continues on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. It's fireworks Friday and fans will get to enjoy a postgame fireworks show immediately after the game. Tickets are available at https://www.milb.com/fayetteville/tickets/single-game-tickets
