LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

@ Portland (10/9): Defenseman Derek Forbort scored his first professional goal, picked up an assist and fought right wing Kyle Hagel to complete the Gordie Howe Hat Trick in the Manchester Monarchs' 3-2 shootout victory over the Portland Pirates and to take game one of the VIP Cup at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Wednesday night. Center Linden Vey also recorded his first tally of the season for the Monarchs. Right wings Tyler Toffoli and Brandon Kozun scored in the shootout for Manchester. Right wing Tobias Rieder tallied both goals for the Pirates in regulation and right wing Jordan Szwarz scored Portland's lone shootout goal. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (1-0-1) earned his first shootout win of the season stopping 25-of-27 shots through regulation and overtime, and 4-of-5 shooters in the shootout. Pirates goaltender Mark Visentin (0-0-1) took his first shootout loss of the season making 37 saves on 39 shots and stopping 3-of-5 shootout snipers. Manchester was 0-for-3 on the power play. Portland went 2-for-5 with the man advantage.

@ Providence (10/11): The Manchester Monarchs fought back from a 2-0 deficit heading into the third period to beat the Providence Bruins, 3-2 in a shootout, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday night. Defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk and right wing Brandon Kozun scored third period goals for the Monarchs. Right wing Tyler Toffoli, center Jordan Weal and left wing Andy Andreoff lit the lamp in the shootout for Manchester. Right wing Nick Johnson and left wing Jared Knight tallied for the Bruins in regulation and center Ryan Spooner scored in the shootout for Providence. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (2-0-1) earned his second shootout victory of the season stopping 24-of-26 shots and 3-of-4 shootout snipers. Bruins netminder Niklas Svedberg (1-0-1) took his first shootout loss of the season making 32 saves on 34 shots and stopping 1-of-4 shootout shooters. Manchester was 1-for-4 on the power play. Providence went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

@ Bridgeport (10/12): Goaltender Martin Jones stopped 38 shots for his first shutout of the 2013-14 season as the Manchester Monarchs blanked the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3-0, in a penalty-filled contest at the Webster Bank Arena on Saturday night. Defenseman Jeff Schultz, left wing Tanner Pearson and right wing Tyler Toffoli found the back of the net for the Monarchs. Sound Tigers netminder Anders Nilsson (1-2-0) took his second loss of the season making 21 saves on 23 shots. Manchester was 0-for-7 on the power play. Bridgeport went 0-for- 11 with the man advantage.

MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

The Manchester Monarchs (3-0-0-1) are ranked first in the Atlantic Division with seven points. The Providence Bruins (2-1-0-1) sit in second place in the division with five points followed by the St. John's IceCaps (1-2-1-0) in third place with three points. The Portland Pirates (0-1-0- 1) are ranked fourth in the division with one point and the Worcester Sharks (0-1-0-0) are in fifth place with zero points after dropping their Season Opener.

The Monarchs have had a good record in their first four games of the season in recent years but they have not gone undefeated in regulation since the 2004-05 season when they won 20 of their first 21 games.

Right wing Brandon Kozun (1-3=4) and center Linden Vey (1-3=4) are tied for the first place on the Monarchs squad with four points this season.

Kozun is currently on a two game assist (two) and point (1-2=3) streaks.

Kozun is also 1-for-2 in shootout attempts this season.

Vey also leads the team with a plus-4 rating.

Right wing Tyler Toffoli (2-1=3) leads the Monarchs with two goals this season.

Center Jordan Weal scored the first goal for the Monarchs for the 2013-14 season on October 5 against the Springfield Falcons and has added two assists for a total of three points (1-2=3).

Defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk (1-1=2), defenseman Derek Forbort (1-1=2), left wing Tanner Pearson (1-1=2) and defenseman Jeff Schultz (1-0=1) picked up goals this week too.

Forbort scored his first professional goal in the Monarchs 3-2 shootout win over Portland on Wednesday. He ended the night with a goal, an assist and a fight for is first Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

Goaltender Martin Jones is undefeated in regulation with one shutout, two shootout victories, and a shootout loss.

After four games, Jones is ranked eighth in the AHL with 1.41 goals-against-average and sixth with a .951 save percentage.

Monarchs Promotions

Home Opening Weekend

- The Monarchs open their 13th season in the Jungle with a pair of weekend games, presented by AutoFair. Fans that join the Monarchs for Opening Night on Saturday, October 19 against the Bruins or Opening Sunday against the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins on Sunday, October 20 will receive magnetic schedules, courtesy of Ray The Mover.
