Bears Try for Mike Haviland's First Win in This Week's Newfoundland Trip

October 14, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

The Hershey Bears' light game schedule continued with just one contest on last weekend's schedule, a 3-1 setback against the Wilkes- Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Bears goaltender David Leggio and Penguins backstop Jeff Deslauriers put on a clinic throughout the game. The first period featured a battle of strong defenses and penalty killing, with each team successful on two kills and each team only being credited with five shots on goal. Tomas Kundratek would finally get the Bears on the board in the second period, taking a hard snap shot that beat Deslauriers for his first of the season. But a shorthanded goal by Brian Gibbons would knot the score just over three minutes later. Leggio kept the game tied with a spectacular glove save in the closing seconds of the period, and with a breakaway stop on Chris Conner in the third. But Conner would eventually put the hosts ahead with 2:38 left, depositing a Gibbons breakaway drop pass. Zach Sill rounded out the scoring with his first of the year with 1:13 remaining.

The Bears head to Newfoundland this weekend for a pair of games against the St. John's IceCaps at Mile One Centre. Faceoff on both Friday and Saturday nights is at 6:00 PM eastern time. The team returns home for games on Saturday, October 26 (Hartford Wolf Pack) and Sunday, October 27 (Norfolk Admirals).

HERSHEY BEARS NEWS AND NOTES

KUNRDATEK STRIKES: D Tomas Kundratek buried his first goal of the season on Saturday at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Kundratek shows 11 points (eight goals, three assists) in 20 games against the Penguins since joining the Bears in November, 2011.

PK IS OK: The Bears finished with a perfect 7-for-7 penalty killing effort in Saturday's contest at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Penguins have scored five power play goals on 15 attempts in their two other games. The Bears are now ranked sixth in the AHL in penalty killing efficiency, allowing one power play goal on 10 chances against (90.0%). The club is also one of three teams (Oklahoma City, Springfield) that are perfect on the road.

STRENGTH IN THE MIDDLE: All of the Bears' goal scoring (four goals) in the team's two games to date has come in the second period.

UNASSISTED: The Bears are one of five teams (Binghamton, Chicago, Norfolk, Providence) in the American Hockey League with at least two players that have registered unassisted goals. Tomas Kundratek's tally on Saturday at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Michael Latta's shorthanded goal in the October 5 season opener were both unassisted.

BORDER CONTROL: The Bears embark on their longest mileage trip of the season this weekend when the team heads to St. John's, Newfoundland. The Bears won both games last year at Mile One Centre by a combined score of 6-1. Former Hershey star forward Andrew Gordon has scored two goals in four games for the IceCaps this season. Veteran forward Jerome Samson (2-3-5) and rookie forward Brenden Kichton (1-4- 5) rank among the AHL's top ten in points, while forward Eric O'Dell enters the week ranked tied for second in goals scored (four).

SHORTHANDED LEADERS: C Michael Latta's two shorthanded points (1-1-2) is enough to rank him tied at the top of the AHL in the category. He and LW Derek Whitmore have one shorthanded goal each, which tie for second in the AHL. The Bears are tied for the league lead in shorthanded goals scored at home (two).
