LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

@ Springfield (10/5): Left wing Broc Little scored the lone shootout goal as the Manchester Monarchs dropped their Season Opener, 3-2 in a shootout, to the Springfield Falcons at the MassMutual Center on Saturday night. Center Jordan Weal scored the first goal of the Monarchs 2013-14 season and right wing Tyler Toffoli picked up his first tally of the season. Centers Darryl Boyce and Michael Chaput scored for the Falcons in regulation. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (0-0-1) took his first shootout loss of the season stopping 30-of-32 shots in regulation and overtime, and four-of-five shootout snipers. Falcons netminder Jeffrey Smith (1-0-0) earned his first win of the season with 22 saves on 24 shots in regulation and overtime, and he shutout all five shootout shooters. Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Springfield was 0-for-7 with the man advantage.

MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

The Manchester Monarchs (0-0-0-1) are ranked third in the Atlantic Division with one point. The St. John's IceCaps (1-0-1-0) lead the division with three points followed by the Providence Bruins (1-1-0-0) who have two points. The Worcester Sharks (0-0-0-0) open their season against the Springfield Falcons on Saturday, October 12 and the Portland Pirates (0-0-0-0) kick of their 2013-14 season against the Monarchs on Wednesday, October 9.

The Monarchs have begun the season on the road seven times over the last 13 seasons and have a record of 2-4-0-1 in those games.

Manchester has an overall record in Season Openers of 5-7-0-1.

The Monarchs dropped their Season Opener for the 2013-14 season with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Falcons at the MassMutual Center on Saturday, October 5, 2013.

The Monarchs Season Opener has been pushed to overtime and a shootout only twice in franchise history. The team is 1-1 in shootouts in Season Openers. Manchester topped Worcester 5-4 in a shootout on October 7, 2006.

The Monarchs play the first four games of the 2013-14 season on the road before returning to the Verizon Wireless Arena for their Home Opener against the Bruins on Saturday, October 19.

Center Jordan Weal scored the first goal for the Monarchs for the 2013-14 season. Weal registered 33 points (15-18=33) and 38 penalty minutes in 63 games with the Monarchs during the 2012-13 season.

Right wing Tyler Toffoli also picked up his first goal of the season in the Monarchs Season Opener.

Toffoli ended the 2012-13 season with three assists in three games before being called up to the Los Angeles Kings on April 24, 2013. He collected five points (2-3=5) and two penalty minutes in 10 regular season games with the Kings. Toffoli also recorded six points (2- 4=6) in 12 games with the Kings during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Defenseman Andrew Campbell, right wing Brandon Kozun and left wing Tanner Pearson each tallied an assist in Saturday's game.

Campbell ranks second on the Monarchs all-time games played list with 346 games from 2008 to present.

Kozun leads the Monarchs all-time in game-winning goals with 16 tallies.

Kozun also ranks third all-time with 24 power play goals, sixth with 69 goals, 10th with 82 assists and is tied for seventh with 151 points in 222 games with the Monarchs from 2010 to present.

Defenseman Jeff Schultz appeared in his first American Hockey League game since October 13, 2007. The veteran defenseman has spent the last seven seasons playing for the Washington Capitals.

Goaltender Martin Jones is undefeated in regulation in Season Openers over the last three seasons. Along with Saturday's shootout loss, Jones earned a 5-2 victory over the Falcons on October 7, 2011 and backstopped Manchester to a 3-1 win over Providence on October 12, 2012.

After one game, Jones s tied for fifth place in the AHL with 1.85 goals-against-average and ranked eighth with a .9938 save percentage.

Home Opening Weekend

- The Monarchs open their 13th season in the Jungle with a pair of weekend games, presented by AutoFair. Fans that join the Monarchs for Opening Night on Saturday, October 19 against the Bruins or Opening Sunday against the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins on Sunday, October 20 will receive magnetic schedules, courtesy of Ray The Mover.
