LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
vs. Providence (10/19): The Manchester Monarchs could not overcome a three goal first period deficit and dropped their Home Opener, 4-3, to the Providence Bruins as right wing Jordan Caron recorded a hat trick at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. The Monarchs received goals from left wing Richard Clune, center Robbie Czarnik and right wing Tyler Toffoli. Center Ryan Spooner also scored for the Bruins. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (2-1-0) took his first loss of the season stopping 13-of-17 shots. Bruins netminder Niklas Svedberg (1-0-0) earned his first win of the season making 30 saves on 33 shots. Manchester went 1-for-6 on the power play. Providence was 3-for-4 with the man advantage.
vs. Portland (10/20): The Manchester Monarchs took the first match-up of the inaugural VIP Cup with a 6-4 come from behind win over the Portland Pirates at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. The Monarchs scored goals from center Andrei Loktionov, left wing Tanner Pearson (two), right wing Tyler Toffoli, center Linden Vey and defenseman Slava Voynov. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (3-1-0) earned his third win of the season making saves on 24-of-28 shots. Pirates netminder Chad Johnson (0-2-0) took his second loss of the season registering 30 saves on 35 shots. Manchester went 2-for-6 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (3-1-0-0) sit in first place in the Atlantic Division with six points. The Providence Bruins (2-2-0-0) and the St. John's IceCaps (2-2-0-0) are tied for second place in the division with four points each. The Portland Pirates (1-2-0-0) sit in fourth place in the division with two points. The Worcester Sharks (0-3-0-1) rank fifth in the division with one point.
Manchester is 7-5-0-0 in their Home Opener all-time after a 4-3 loss to the Bruins on Friday, October 19.
The Monarchs won the inaugural VIP Cup match-up against the Pirates, 6-4, on Saturday, October 20. The two teams will compete against each other all season long to see who will win the VIP Cup.
The Monarchs are 2-0-0-0 on the road this season.
Manchester is 6-for-18 (33.3%) on the power play this season which ranks third in the American Hockey League.
Manchester's opponents have opened the scoring in each of their first four games this season.
Defenseman David Kolomatis (2-2=4), right wing Brandon Kozun (0-4=4), defenseman Jake Muzzin (0-4=4) and right wing Tyler Toffoli (2-2=4) are tied for the team lead in points with four each.
Kolomatis scored two power play goals in his first game this season, a 2-1 victory against the Albany Devils on Saturday, October 13.
Kolomatis tallied two assists, both on the power play, in a 6-4 comeback victory against the Pirates on Saturday, October 20.
Kozun has a four-game point streak (0-4=4) to begin the season.
Muzzin and Kozun are tied for the team lead with four assists each and rank tied for 12th in the league.
Toffoli has a four-game point streak (2-2=4) to begin his rookie campaign.
Toffoli scored his first professional shorthanded goal against the Pirates on October 20.
Center Andrei Loktionov (2-1=3), left wing Tanner Pearson (2-1=3), center Linden Vey (2-1=3) and defenseman Slava Voynov (1-2=3) are tied for fifth place on the team with three points each.
Loktionov, Kolomatis, Pearson, Toffoli and Vey are tied for the team lead with two goals scored each.
Loktionov has registered two points (1-1=2) in two games against the Bruins this season.
Loktionov has one of the Monarchs two shorthanded goals this season. Loktionov tallied his second career shorthanded goal in a 3-1 victory against the Bruins on October 12.
Loktionov's only previous shorthanded goal was also the game-winning tally in a 4-3 victory against the Pirates on December 17, 2010.
Pearson made his professional debut with the Monarchs against the Bruins on Friday, October 12.
Pearson registered his first professional goals and points against the Pirates on October 20, registering two goals and an assist in the Monarchs 6-4 victory.
Vey tallied an assist and the game-winning goal against the Pirates on October 20 for his first multi-point game of the season.
Vey leads the team in plus/minus rating with a plus-3.
Voynov tallied his first point of the season, an assist, in a 4-3 loss against the Bruins on Friday, October 19.
Voynov tallied a goal and an assist in his first multi-point game of the season against the Pirates on Saturday, October 20.
Center Andy Andreoff (1-1=2), defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk (0-2=2), left wing Marc-Andre Cliche (0-2=2), left wing Richard Clune (1-1=2) and right wing Stefan Legein (0-2=2) are tied for ninth on the Monarchs with two points each.
Andreoff tallied the game-winning goal at 1:43 of the third period on Opening Night against the Bruins on Friday, October 12.
In two games against his former team, Bodnarchuk has registered two assists, two shots and a plus-1 rating versus Providence.
Cliche ranks third on the Monarchs all-time games played list with 288.
Clune leads the team and is tied for fifth in the AHL with 23 penalty minutes.
Clune's 715 penalty minutes rank second on the Monarchs all-time career penalty minutes list.
Center Robbie Czarnik (1-0=1), defenseman Andrew Campbell (0-1=1), left wing Nikolay Prokhorkin (0-1=1) and goaltender Martin Jones (0-1=1) are tied for 14th place on the Monarchs with one point this season.
Czarnik recorded the first goal by a Monarchs player at the Verizon Wireless Arena for the 2012-13 regular season in a 4-3 defeat to the Bruins on Friday, October 19.
Campbell appeared in his 300th professional game (all with the Monarchs) against the Devils on Saturday, October 13. Campbell's 302 games rank second all-time on the Monarchs most games played list.
Prokhorkin tallied an assist on Kolomatis' game-winning goal against the Devils on Saturday, October 13. The game also marked Prokhorkin's AHL debut.
Jones (3-1-0) has played in all four of the Monarchs games of the season registering a 2.51 goals-against-average, a 0.898 save percentage and stopping 88-of-98 shots attempts.
MONARCHS PROMOTIONS
Canadian Heritage Night - The Monarchs are once again celebrating the strong Canadian and Franco-American heritage in New Hampshire when the Monarchs host the Binghamton Senators at 4:00 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday, October 28.
The Monarchs will be wearing Canadian themed jerseys that will be available in live and silent auctions to support the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey . Everything about the game will be about Canada. The prize packs for in-game promotions will include Canadian currency and ketchup chips. Sebastien Goulet will once again serve as the Monarchs PA Announcer and the arena will feature special Canadian music and cuisine.
