LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
@ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (1/20): The Manchester Monarchs scored first but gave up four unanswered goals to drop their seventh consecutive game, a 4-1 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Friday night. Defenseman Patrick Mullen scored the lone goal for the Monarchs. Wilke-Barre/Scranton received goals from left wing Bryan Lerg, right wing Colin McDonald (two) and center Zach Sill. Manchester netminder Jeff Zatkoff (10-8-1) took his eighth loss of the season stopping 4-of-7 shots. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (11-11-1) entered the game after the Penguins third goal in the first period and made 22 saves on 23 shots. Penguins netminder Brad Thiessen (15-10-2) earned his 15th win of the season making 29 saves on 30 shots. Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
@ Hershey (1/21): The Manchester Monarchs snapped their franchise record seven-game losing streak against the Hershey Bears, 5-4, at the Giant Center on Saturday night. The Monarchs tallied goals from center Justin Azevedo, center Marc-Andre Cliche, right wing Jordan Nolan, center Cam Paddock and right wing Linden Vey. The Bears saw goals from center Keith Aucoin, left wing Boyd Kane and forward Jacob Micflickier (two). Monarchs netminder Martin Jones (12-11-1) earned his 12th win of the season stopping 31-of-35 shots. Bears goaltender Danny Sabourin (10-5-2) took his fifth loss of the season making 33 saves on 38 shots. Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Hershey was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
@ Hershey (1/22): Right wing Stefan Legein tallied a shorthanded goal and a power play goal to lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 4-2 victory over the Hershey Bears at the Giant Center on Sunday afternoon. Manchester scored goals from center Justin Azevedo, left wing Dwight King and right wing Stefan Legein (two). Center Keith Aucoin and defenseman Julien Brouillette tallied the goals for the Bears. Monarchs netminder Jeff Zatkoff (11-8-1) earned his 11th win of the season stopping 29-of-31 shots. Bears goaltender Braden Holtby (14-10-1) took his 10th loss of the season with 15 saves on 18 shots. Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Hershey was 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (23-19-0-2) are tied with the Worcester Sharks (20-12-3-5) for second place in the Atlantic Division with 48 points. The St. John's IceCaps (24-11-5-1) are in first place in the division with 54 points. The Portland Pirates (21-16-2-3) sit in fourth place in the division with 47 points. The Providence Bruins (19-20-2-3) are in fifth place in the division with 43 points.
At the Verizon Wireless Arena this season, Manchester owns a 12-8-0-1 record.
The Monarchs set a franchise record for consecutive losses at seven games (0-7-0-0) before defeating the Hershey Bears twice in two days. It is the first time the Monarchs have defeated the Bears twice in one season.
This season, the Monarchs are 16-4-0-2 in games that have been decided by one goal.
Manchester is 15-10-0-2 against Atlantic Division teams this season.
The Monarchs are half way through a stretch of six games in nine days. The three remaining games are at home against the Adirondack Phantoms, St. John's and Worcester. Manchester is 2-1-0-0 in their first three games in this stretch.
Manchester is 12-3-0-2 in games when they have led after the first period and 12-0-0-1 when leading after the second period.
When scoring first this season, the Monarchs are 16-6-0-2.
Manchester's 780 penalty minutes rank sixth in the league this season. The team is averaging 17.7 penalty minutes a game which also ranks sixth in the league.
The Monarchs have been outshot in 29 of their 44 games and own a 15-13-0-1 record in those games.
Center Marc-Andre Cliche (12-15') leads the team with 12 goals and 27 points.
Cliche's four game-winning goals lead the team and are tied for fifth in the league.
Going a perfect 6-for-6 in the shootout, Cliche ranks first on the team and is tied for the best percentage in the AHL. Cliche's six shootout tallies are the most by any player in the AHL this season.
Cliche is tied with defenseman David Kolomatis (4-9=13) for second place on the team with a plus-7 rating each.
On Sunday, January 22, Cliche tallied three assists for his second three-point game of the season. The other three-point game was a natural hat trick recorded on October 7, 2011 against the Springfield Falcons.
Cliche ranks ninth on the Monarchs all-time games played list with 256 games and is also 10th on the Monarchs all-time goals scored list with 53.
Monarchs left wing Dwight King (8-18&) leads the team with 18 assists.
Right wing Brandon Kozun (10-12=22) ranks third on the Monarchs with 22 points.
Kozun is tied for eighth in the AHL with five first goals of the game.
Kozun is third on the team with 10 goals scored.
Kozun's four power play tallies lead the team.
Defenseman Patrick Mullen (6-15=21) leads Monarchs defensemen with six goals, 15 assists and 21 points this season.
Mullen's 21 points rank fourth on the team.
Right wing Linden Vey (11-9=20) ranks fifth on the team in scoring with 20 points.
Vey's 11 tallies rank second on the Monarchs.
Right wing Jordan Nolan (8-11=19) is ranked sixth on the Monarchs with 19 points.
Nolan's 117 penalty minutes lead the Monarchs and ranks seventh in the league.
Center Justin Azevedo (7-9=16) is seventh on the Monarchs in scoring and currently has a three-game point streak (2-1=3).
Azevedo ranks eighth on both the Monarchs all-time assist list (81) and the Monarchs all-time points list (132).
Defenseman Thomas Hickey (2-13=15) is eighth on the Monarchs in scoring this season with 15 points.
Hickey leads the Monarchs with a plus/minus rating of plus-11. Hickey was named to the Eastern Conference Team at the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic in Atlantic City, New Jersey on January 29-30.
Center Robbie Czarnik (5-9=14) is tied with center Andrei Loktionov (3-11=14) for ninth on the Monarchs with 14 points each.
Czarnik has five points (1-4=5) in his last three games. Loktionov was recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, November 14 and has recorded four points (0-4=4) and two penalty minutes in 28 games this season.
In 48 career games with the Kings, Loktionov has 11 points (4-7=11) and four penalty minutes.
Defenseman Andrew Campbell (2-10=12) is tied for sixth on the Monarchs all-time games played list with 266. Campbell has appeared in all 44 games this season for the Monarchs.
Defenseman Nick Deslauriers (1-6=7) has tallied a goal and four assists (1-4=5) in nine games during January which leads all Monarchs defenders for the month.
Right wing Justin Johnson (1-2=3) is tied with defenseman Slava Voynov (2-1=3) with three points each.
Johnson is second on the team and is tied for 13th in the AHL with 106 penalty minutes.
Voynov was recalled to the Kings on November 15. In 30 games with Los Angeles this season, Voynov has 11 points (4-7=11) and six penalty minutes.
