Syracuse Crunch News Release

January 3, 2012 marked an unforgettable day for left wing Luca Caputi. In the morning, he woke up a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, and a current player for the Toronto Marlies. He took to the ice in the morning with his Marlies teammates in preparation for the evening's contest at the Ricoh Coliseum against the Syracuse Crunch. At 3 pm, that would all change. Caputi was traded to the Anaheim Ducks organization in exchange for Nicolas Deschamps and was immediately assigned to Syracuse. And just like that, Caputi entered the Ricoh Coliseum like he had all season long, but this time he would have to walk down the hall to the visiting a locker room. But it was this change of scenery that Caputi needed. In 21 games with the Marlies this season, Caputi had just three points. In nine games with the Crunch, Caputi has registered nine points (3g, 6a). He helped the Crunch finish 4-2-0-1 on their recent road trip with seven points during a five game point streak. Overall, he has points in seven of the nine games he has played for the Crunch this season.

CARLE CHIPPING IN FROM THE BLUELINE: With a recent string of solid play, Mathieu Carle has taken the team lead in points among defensemen with 24 (3g, 21a). Between December 17 and January 20, Carle produced 11 points (1g, 10) in 10 games. Only Patrick Maroon had more points in that span on the Crunch. His 24 points are tied for seventh in AHL among defensemen and his 21 assists are tied for fourth. The Gatineau, Quebec, native is also second among Crunch defensemen (Mark Fraser) with a +8.

TRANSACTIONS: Josh Brittain was reassigned from Elmira to the Crunch, while Nick Schaus was recalled from Elmira. Over the weekend, Schaus pitched in with a goal and two assists in two games. Brittain tallied two points (1g, 1a) in two games.

UPCOMING OPPONENTS:

ROCHESTER (BUFFALO SABRES): The Rochester Americans and Syracuse Crunch meet for the fifth time in their 10-game season series. In the previous four contests, the Crunch have gone 1-1-1-1. Dan Sexton leads all skaters in the season series with 10 points (2g, 8a). Six players for Rochester have registered three points against the Crunch this season. The latest meeting was a 3-2 Rochester win at the Blue Cross Arena. Former teammate of Dan Sexton at Bowling Green State, Derek Whitmore, leads the Americans with 15 goals and 24 points. David Leggio paces Rochester with 12 wins.

BRIDGEPORT (NEW YORK ISLANDERS): Saturday marks the first of two meetings between the Crunch and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this season. In 2011-12, the teams split the two-game series. Bridgeport is the hottest team in the AHL, winning their last eight games, to help move into a second-place tie in the Northeast Division with Adirondack and Albany. Rookie Casey Cizikas leads Bridgeport with 29 points. Swede David Ullstrom is the team leader with 14 goals. Kevin Poulin has played a majority of the games in goal, going 11-12-0.
