LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
At Worcester (12/18): The Manchester Monarchs could only muster a shorthanded goal as they fell to the Worcester Sharks, 3-1, at the DCU Center on Friday night. Left wing Bud Holloway scored the lone goal for the Monarchs. Left wing John McCarthy, center Ryan Vesce and center Steven Zalewski tallied for the Sharks. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (14-8-2) took the loss with 34 saves on 37 shots. Sharks netminder Alex Stalock (14-7-1) earned his 14th win of the season stopping 24-of-25 shots. Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Worcester was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
Vs. Lowell (12/19): Goaltender Jonathan Bernier picked up his fourth shutout of the season stopping all 34 shots he faced in the Manchester Monarchs 2-0 blanking of the Lowell Devils at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. Center Oscar Moller tipped in the game-winning goal and right wing Scott Parse added an empty net goal for the Monarchs. Bernier (15-8-2) secured his 15th win of the season with the victory. Devils goaltender Mike McKenna (11-7-0) dropped his seventh game of the season, making 29 saves on 30 shots. Manchester went 0-for-1 on the power play. Lowell was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (21-9-1-2) remain in first place in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference with 45 points. They are also first in the AHL with the Texas Stars (20-9-2-2) close behind with 44 points.
The Monarchs are 13-3-0-1 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season with their only regulation losses coming at the hands of the Hershey Bears on Saturday, November 7 in a 4-1 loss, a 2-0 shutout to the Portland Pirates on Wednesday, December 2 and a 3-2 loss to the Lowell Devils on Saturday, December 12. Manchester won their first six home games this season.
The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked third in the AHL. They have given up 15 goals in 137 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.
Their power play is ranked seventh in the league with 24 goals on 130 opportunities with the man advantage.
Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 25-of-33 games thus far this season.
The Monarchs are 12-0-0-0 when scoring the first goal on home ice.
Manchester is also undefeated on home ice when playing on Fridays this season with a record of 6-0-0-0.
The Monarchs shutout their opponent for the 70th time in team history when they blanked the Lowell Devils, 2-0, on Saturday.
Corey Elkins (8-12=20) leads the Monarchs with 20 points.
Center Oscar Moller (9-10=19) scored his ninth goal of the season to move into a tie with left wing Bud Holloway (9-10=19) for the team lead in goal scoring.
Center Gabe Gauthier (5-14=19) leads the Monarchs with 14 assists.
Moller is tied for second in the AHL with four game-winning goals.
Holloway's three game-winning goals are tied for 12th place in the AHL.
Right wing Scott Parse (3-9=12) leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-10.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (6-11=17) leads Monarchs blueliners with 17 points.
Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 15-8-2 in 25 games of the season. His 15 wins are ranked second in the AHL.
Bernier's four shutouts are also tied for third in the AHL.
Bernier is ranked fourth in the league with a 1.92 goals-against-average and is ranked second with a.943 save percentage.
MONARCHS PROMOTIONS
Poster Night - The first 2,000 fans to the Monarchs game on Sunday, December 27 when they host the Providence Bruins will receive a Monarchs limited edition poster.
