Manchester Monarchs News Release

Hartford, CT - The Manchester Monarchs ran their unbeaten streak to three games with a 3-2 Eastern Conference victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday at the Hartford Civic Center. A crowd of 8,914 watched as the Monarchs spoiled Hartford's home opener with two third period power play goals.

Center Steve Kelly broke a 1-1 third period tie with his second goal of the season. Kelly, who also registered a first period assist, gathered in a Yanick Lehoux neutral zone pass, stormed into the Wolf Pack zone, and roofed a back-handed shot past Hartford goaltender Scott Meyer at 10:11. The Monarchs added to their lead minutes later when wing Scott Barney potted his first professional goal at 13:13. Defenseman Jason Holland and winger Steve Heinze assisted on the play.

The three goals proved to be enough for the Monarchs as netminder Travis Scott preserved the win with 10 third period saves. Scott finished with 31 saves for the game.

The Monarchs opened the scoring with a power play tally from defenseman Joe Corvo, his third goal in as many games. Winger Pavel Rosa located Corvo cutting toward the net and fed him perfectly for the power play score at 13:29 of period one. Center Steve Kelly also assisted on the play. The Monarchs outshot the Pack 15 to 9 in the first stanza.

Period one also featured a pair of fights. The Monarchs Kip Brennan and the Packs Garrett Burnett dueled at 14:30, and the Monarchs Joe Rullier and the Packs Gordie Dwyer dropped their gloves at 16:37.

Left wing Rico Fata added to his team-leading goal total in the second period when he took advantage of a Monarchs defensive turnover and wristed a shot past Monarchs goaltender Travis Scott at 4:19. Fata intercepted a Monarchs clearing pass and scored his fifth goal in four games.

The Monarchs also skated down a man for seven minutes of the second period after Steve Kelly was assessed a minor penalty for slashing and a major penalty for high-sticking at 10:35. The extended power play time helped the Pack outshoot the Monarchs 13 to 10 in the period.

The Monarchs (2-1-1-0) return to AHL action when they host the Springfield Falcons at the Big V on Wednesday, October 23 at 7:05 p.m.
