Manchester Monarchs News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Manchester Monarchs fell to the Providence Bruins on St. Patrick's Day, 3-1, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester (29-26-3-4) is in third place in the Atlantic Division with 65 points. Providence (40-19-0-5) is in first place in the Atlantic Division with 71 points.
"We actually played fairly well this afternoon," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "The result wasn't great but I felt we competed a lot harder and tried to execute the details of the game. A couple of defensive errors proved costly and Hutchinson was sharp in net for Providence. We'll need to bounce back quickly for Wednesday's game in Springfield."
Center Ryan Spooner regained the lead for the Bruins at 2-1 with a goal at 19:58 of the second period. Defenseman Kevan Miller played the puck out of the left wing corner and back to defenseman Torey Krug at the left point. Krug sent a slap pass for Spooner at the right doorstep where Spooner buried it into the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season.
Providence opened the scoring with a goal by left wing Maxime Suave at 17:16 of the first period. Right wing Alexander Fallstrom carried the puck out of the right wing face-off corner and fed it to defenseman Colby Cohen on the right wing half wall. Cohen chipped the puck down to Sauve in the right wing corner before Suave skated toward the top of the right wing circle. As Suave skated out of the right wing corner, he wristed a shot high on the glove side of Monarchs goaltender Jean-Francois Berube beating the netminder for his 10th goal of the season.
Manchester tied the game at 1-1 with a goal by center Jordan Weal at 12:48 of the second period. Weal gained the Bruins zone on the left wing. Weal then had the puck poked free off his stick. As the Bruins gained possession, Weal poked the puck free and turned toward the net and wristed a shot past Bruins netminder Michael Hutchinson for his 10th goal of the season.
The Bruins opened up a 3-1 lead with a goal by defenseman Graham Mink at 10:25 of the third period. Defenseman Garnet Exelby played the puck to Spooner as the Bruins broke the puck out of their own zone. Spooner gained the Monarchs zone in down the middle of the ice before passing to Mink on the right wing. Mink skated inside the right wing face-off before taking a slap shot. Mink's shot beat Berube for his seventh goal of the season.
Berube (0-2-0) took his second loss of the season making 34 saves on 37 shots. Hutchinson (8-12-3) earned his eighth victory of the season stopping 26-of-27 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-1 on the power play. Providence went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
