Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 3-1 this afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Max Sauv é, Ryan Spooner and Graham Mink scored for Providence. Michael Hutchinson made 26 saves, his first win versus the Monarchs, as the Bruins improved to 38-19-0-5.
In their final regular season battle at The Dunk in 2012-13, the Providence Bruins and Manchester Monarchs started the first frame hungry for a win. The Bruins, coming off a home-and-home sweep of the Springfield Falcons, controlled the play early in the frame and pummelled Jean-Francois Berube, playing in only his second game for Manchester, with shots. The Bruins' forward finally broke through at 17:16 when Sauvé walked in from the goal line and ripped a shot top shelf on a Berube. Colby Cohen and Alex Fallstrom assisted on the play. The assist marked Fallstrom's first professional point in his first professional game after he was signed to an entry-level contract by Boston on Saturday and an ATO earlier today.
The Bruins picked up where they left off in the second period, controlling much of the game play. Much of the second period was a battle between the goaltenders, but Hutchinson and Berube both made great saves. The Monarchs capitalized on a Bruins turnover in the far right circle and beat Hutchinson at 12:48 to tie the score 1-1. Despite the lapse, the Bruins came right back and with a power play goal from Spooner with two seconds to play in the period. Torey Krug collected his seventh assist in five games when he fed Spooner back door, allowing him to easily notch his 12th goal of the season and regain the lead.
Much like the first two periods, the Bruins continued to control much of the play in the third. The Bruins found the back of the net at 10:25 of the third period to take a 3-1 lead. Mink's wrist shot from the right circle snuck between Berube's shoulder and the post for Mink's seventh goal of the season. Spooner and Exelby assisted on the play. Despite a last ditch effort from the Monarchs, the Bruins held on and skated away with a 3-1 win and the weekend sweep.
The Bruins return to The Dunk on Friday, March 22 versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. for Clapper Night. The first 2,000 fans will receive free clappers courtesy of Washington Trust.
