Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - August 13, 2011. The Madison Mallards have announced a line-up change for the sixth annual Mallards/MLB Alumni Game on Sunday, August 14th. Former Milwaukee Brewer and Baseball Hall of Famer Paul Molitor and fellow Hall of Famer Ferguson "Fergie" Jenkins have replaced Pete Rose as headliners for this year's event. Rose was a late scratch due to a severe back injury. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. for an autograph session, and the exhibition game featuring the former major leaguers and former Mallards will begin at 5:05 p.m. Molitor will sign autographs from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and may have one at-bat in the game.
Molitor, who also headlined the 2009 Mallards MLB/Alumni Game, was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004 and played 15 seasons for the Brewers (1978 to 1992). Nicknamed the "Ignitor," Molitor was a five-time All-Star with the Brewers and was a member of the 1982 team that reached the World Series. Although Milwaukee lost the series to St. Louis, Molitor was impressive batting .355 (11-for-31) with a five-hit game in the series opener. He also possesses one of the longest hit streaks in MLB history when he had a 39-game streak in 1987.
Molitor signed with Toronto as a free agent in 1992 and was a member of the Blue Jays' team that won the 1993 World Series. He was named MVP after hitting .500 for the series. His career would end after three seasons with the Minnesota Twins (1996-1998). On September 6, 1996, Molitor obtained career hit number 3,000 with a triple. He is the only player in history to reach 3,000 hits by hitting a three- bagger.
Jenkins headlined the game in 2008 and was a three-time All-Star during his 19-year career. He also won the 1971 Cy Young Award. Jenkins is known for his tenure with the Chicago Cubs, where he played from 1966 to 1973 and again from 1982 to 1983. He went six straight season with 20 or more wins from 1967 to 1972 during his first stint with the Cubs. He also pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Boston Red Sox. In 1973, Jenkins won a career-best 25 games with the Rangers, which still stands for the most wins by a pitcher in Rangers' history.
Over his career, Jenkins went 284-226 with a 3.34 earned run average. He also notched 3,192 strikeouts in his career and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
Other former MLB players scheduled to appear in Sunday's game are Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Jerry Reuss, Jay Johnstone, Jim Gantner, Jason Jacome, Brad Woodall, and Vern Geishert.
The list of former Mallards to play in the game include Jake Eiler (RHP, 2003-2004), James Kalinowski (RHP, 2001), Chris Maliszewski (LHP, 2003), Craig Meier (RHP, 2006-2008), Randy Molina (INF, 2005-2007), Matt Musser (OF, 2003-2005), Tyler Schill (Coach, 2009), and Nate Trumm (C, 2003-2005).
