Madison Mallards News Release
BATTLE CREEK, MI - The Madison Mallards were defeated by the Battle Creek Bombers 3-1 Saturday at C.O. Brown Stadium. The game was the opener of a two-game season-ending series, and the Mallards fell to 16-17 on the second half with one more game to play in the 2011 season.
The Bombers never trailed in the game, as they scored in the first inning. Jordan Dean (Central Michigan) scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Rockett (Texas - San Antonio) to get the scoring underway. Battle Creek also scored once in the fourth and eighth innings respectively to round out their offensive output at three runs.
The Mallards scored their lone run in the third inning when Mike McQuillan (Iowa) doubled home Willie Argo (Illinois).
In total, Battle Creek out-hit Madison 9-4 in the game as they move to 5-4 on the season against the Mallards. Jimmy Martinez (Western Michigan) and Rhett Goodmiller (Taylor University) paced the offense for the Bombers with two hits and an RBI each.
The Mallards were led by a group of four hitters to tally hits in the game. Argo went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored out of the leadoff spot, and the trio of McQuillan, Matt Juengel (Texas A&M), and Zack Powers (Florida) collected the other three hits.
Madison starter Tom Windle (Minnesota) had arguably his best start of the season, but the lack of offensive production and two costly errors on defense proved to be his downfall. Windle (2-4) was the losing pitcher of record Saturday after going 6.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out a season-high eight batters. Travis Parker (St. Louis) pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Mallards.
The win went to Bombers' starter Scott Simmons (Tusculum College). Simmons went 5.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits. Kristian Calibuso (Eastern Michigan) ended the game by picking up his team-high 11th save of the season.
The Mallards and the Bombers will finish the two-game series Sunday evening in a 4:05 p.m. start. Jonathon Crawford (Florida) will get the call to start for Madison. He will go up against Chad Jasman (Michigan). The game will be the final contest for the Mallards in the 2011 Northwoods League season, and Battle Creek will prepare for postseason play following the conclusion of Sunday's game.
