Honkers Fall to Walk-Off

( Rochester, MN) - In the second to last game of the season the Rochester Honkers lost 4-1 to the Duluth Huskies on Saturday night at Wade Stadium in Duluth. The loss lowers the Honkers record to 15-22 on the season.

The Honkers struck first, scoring their run in the fourth inning, before Duluth struck back and tied it in the sixth. Duluth would win the game with a walk-off three run home run in the bottom of the ninth, sending both teams home.

Erik Mattingly (Jr, Creighton) and Garrett Benson (So, Bethany Lutheran) pitched for the Honkers in what was a pitching duel for the first eight innings. Mattingly would get the start and the first four innings of the game. He finished after only allowing two hits and shutting down the Huskies. Benson would pitch the next 4.1 innings, getting the loss and allowing four runs on eight hits.

The Honkers would only muster three hits in the game, from Davy Wright (So, TCU), Seth McMullen (So, Winona State) and Mattingly. Mattingly's hit was a double, driving in the Honkers run of the game. He would go 1-for-2 before being pulled from the mound and the batting order.

The Honkers and Huskies will conclude the 2011 season tomorrow, with a 5:05 pm first pitch at Wade Stadium. The Honkers will have Ben Heairet (So, Augustana) on the mound, making his third start of the season.

Earlier in the day, Johnny Coy (RsJr, Wichita State) was named to the Northwoods League Post-Season All-Star team. Coy was the only Honker named to the team.
