Lancaster Stormers News Release
Fresh off a four-RBI night on Friday, Gustavo Molina only got one good swing in on Saturday evening.
It was still too much for the Barnstormers to overcome.
The Southern Maryland catcher slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Blue Crabs to a 3-2 lead over visiting Lancaster at Regency Furniture Stadium.
Lancaster fell seven games behind Southern Maryland with the loss.
Matt Packer (3-3) carried a two-hitter into the bottom of the sixth but yielded a leadoff single to Zach Wilson. One out later, Molina roped a ball onto the picnic deck down the left field line, his league leading eighth homer of the season.
The Barnstormers were foiled by Wade Korpi in the seventh and Justin Berg in the eighth but battled their way back into the game off Fernando Nieve in the ninth. Brian Cavazos-Galvez doubled into the left field corner to start the inning. Nieve got two outs, but Lance Zawadzki singled through the hole on the right side to drive in a run. Tyler Bortnick followed with another base hit on the right side. Lancaster batted left-handed Chris Garcia for the righty-swinging Dan Coury. Garcia forced the count to 3-2 before succumbing on a swing to end the game, giving Nieve his first save.
Cavazos-Galvez had staked Lancaster to a 1-0 lead in the fourth with his fifth home run of the season. Southern Maryland countered in the bottom of the inning as Casey Stevenson banged a two-out RBI single into right to score Wilson from third.
The Barnstormers had a chance to take the lead in the top of the sixth. With Cavazos-Galvez on second and Kevin Rivers on first, Juan Apodaca worked the count to full against Brian Baker (2-1). Butch Hobson started the runners, and Apodaca hit a line drive to center that was snared by Antone DeJesus, who was able to double Rivers off first to end the inning.
Lancaster sends Shunsuke Watanabe (1-1) to the hill on Sunday afternoon against Jake Hale (3-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 1:45.
NOTES: Cavazos-Galvez has all five of his homers on the road...Blake Gailen was 0-for-3 but did walk for a league leading 23rd time...Packer threw his third quality start...Bryan Morgado threw his fifth straight scoreless inning...Scott Gracey fanned two and now has 20 K's in 13.1 IP...Rivers has drawn six walks in the last five games.
