Tempers Flare As Revs Drop One Sided Affair

May 23, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution took one on the chin on Saturday night, suffering a 17-4 defeat to the Somerset Patriots in front of 4,887 fans at Santander Stadium. The loss is the fifth straight for the Revs and their tenth in-a-row at home, dropping to 10-18. Somerset improves to a league-best 20-8, having won 12 of their last 14 overall. York will look to get things turned around on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Somerset jumped in front in the top of the second. With two outs, Greg Hopkins dropped a bloop double into shallow right on a check swing to plate the game's first run. Robert Andino followed with an RBI single to right-center, while another run would later score on an error to make it 3-0.

York answered with a run in their half of the second. Shannon Wilkerson and Steve Proscia led off with singles and Salvador Paniagua laid down a sacrifice bunt. Wilkerson then scored on a throwing error by third baseman Chris Marrero, making it a 3-1 game. York was primed for more runs but Hopkins made a diving catch at second base on a line drive by Wilson Valdez for an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Somerset added two more in the third courtesy of an RBI single to right from Scott Cousins and an RBI double to right-center by Mat Gamel, increasing the margin to 5-1.

York again inched back, scoring in the bottom of the third as Bryan Pounds doubled to left-center and scored on a triple to left-center by Wilkerson with two outs, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

Gamel launched a grand slam to right-center in the top of the fourth, turning the game one-sided at 9-2.

Somerset scored three more runs in the seventh, doing so on RBI doubles by Andino and Marrero with an RBI groundout by Jonny Tucker in between.

Tempers had flared earlier in the night on apparent gestures by Gamel while rounding the bases following the grand slam, his first home run of the year. Frustrations came to a head in the top of the eighth when Gamel was hit by a pitch by reliever Edward Paredes. Benches cleared with no punches thrown, but Paredes, Paniagua, and Tucker were all ejected for their roles in the altercation.

Somerset hit the Revs with a five-run ninth inning, scoring on two-run singles by Marrero and Andino, as well as an RBI infield hit from Hopkins.

York avoided tying a club record for a most lopsided defeat by scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth. Four consecutive walks from reliever Daniel Sattler including a bases loaded free pass to Andres Perez produced one run, while a sac fly to right field by Pounds plated the other.

The 17 runs scored by Somerset marked the most in a game by a Revs opponent since the 2012 season, and came within one of matching the record for most runs allowed in a game in team history.

Several Patriots enjoyed monstrous nights at the plate. Thomas Neal reached base five out of six times, going 3-for-4 with three runs. He was followed in the order by Marrero who reached base all six times out of the cleanup spot, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and four runs. Gamel totaled a team-best five RBI after entering the game with a .122 average and just two RBI on the season. Andino went 3-for-6 and drove in four; the former big leaguer has five RBI in the series, after entering the series with just one hit in his previous 22 at-bats.

The Patriots used six different pitchers with Paul Smyth (2-0) being credited the win in relief, working two scoreless innings.

York starter Corey Thurman (1-3) suffered the loss, charged with five runs (four earned) on seven hits in two-plus innings. He falls to 11-6 lifetime against the Patriots, 8-2 at home.

The Revs are now 0-5 against Somerset this season.

York will look to change its fortunes as right-hander Shawn Hill (1-2, 3.75) squares off with Patriots southpaw Matt Zielinski (1-0, 1.52) on Sunday evening. It is PA Outdoors Day, Boomer's Book Club presented by Community Courier, and Celebrating York County Public Education Night presented by York County Coordinating Council. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
