Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Sugar Land Skeeters committed three errors and produced just three runs in a 7-3 loss to Bridgeport on Saturday at Harbor Yard in Connecticut. The loss drops the Skeeters to 12-17 through the early portion of the season while Bridgeport improves to 15-13.
Shane Loux was saddled with the loss for the Skeeters. The former San Francisco Giant gave up six runs (four earned) on ten hits while striking out three in 5.2 innings of work.
The Bluefish made the game's first splash in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff strikeout, Luis Rodriguez and Ildemaro Vargas notched back-to-back singles. Nick Van Straten cleared the bases with a double into the outfield alley, scoring a pair and Sean Burroughs expanded the lead with a single, staking Bridgeport to a 3-0 advantage on Loux.
Bridgeport tacked on an additional run in the fourth. Following a John Alonso leadoff single, Beamer Weems made an inaccurate throw on a would-be double play ball into second, moving up Alonso to third. Rodriguez would get a ball into the outfield, allowing Alonso to come in to score and expand the lead to 4-0.
The Bluefish continued to tack on runs in the sixth inning, adding a pair aided by another Sugar Land error. Ryan Babineau picked up a one-out double and came in to score on a single by James Simmons. Simmons would move up to second on the throw home and came in to score on an error by Travis Scott at first, staking the Bluefish to a 6-0 advantage and chasing Loux from the game.
Sugar Land's bats came alive in the top of the seventh. Delwyn Young, Chris Wallace and Dustin Martin hit a single, double and triple, respectively, to open up the inning and crack the scoreboard for the first time on the evening. Weems atoned for his error earlier in the contest by poking a single through the infield to score Martin and cut the deficit to three.
Bridgeport responded in the bottom of the seventh, adding a run of its own to inflate the cushion to four. Wellington Dotel legged out a one out triple off reliever, Ramon Delgado, before coming in to score on a dropped fly ball by Denny Almonte. The Bluefish would be unable to take advantage of the miscue, however, as Delgado struck out the final two batters in the inning.
Weems blasted a two-out double in the top of the ninth, but it would be too little, too late for Sugar Land as it fell to the Bluefish, 7-3.
