Modesto Nuts News Release
The Modesto Nuts opened up a seven game homestand by defeating the Bakersfield Blaze 9-6 on Tuesday night. Jonathan Herrera was the hero by getting on base five times (two walks and three doubles), scoring two runs and collecting three RBIs.
The scoring for Modesto started in the third inning when shortstop Troy Tulowitzki hit a double that scored Jonathan Herrera who had previously walked. The scoring continued in the fourth inning when Modesto scored four unearned runs off Blaze starter Wylie Lebron. Michael Davies came to bat with two outs and the bases loaded and hit a ground ball to first baseman John Kruezer, who allowed the ball to go between his legs that scored two runs. Jonathan Herrera then followed with a double to left field that scored two more runs. The Nuts scored two more runs in the seventh on a triple by centerfielder Joe Gaetti and a double by DH Randy Blood. The scoring for Modesto concluded in the eighth when Jonathan Herrera hit his third double of the game, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by Blaze catcher Justin Hatcher.
Starting pitcher Marc Kaiser lasted five innings, surrendered 11 hits, left eight runners on base and allowed four runs in a very gutsy outing for the right-hander. Alberto Arias (3-2) was the winner and Jim Miller collected his league leading 25th save.
The series continues Wednesday night when Juan Morillo takes the mound for Modesto against Cody Smith for the Blaze. Game time at John Thurman Field is 7:05 p.m.
