San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants held off the Stockton Ports 5-4 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series. In front of 2,714 fans at Banner Island Ballpark, Joe Bateman worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to preserve the victory. Offensively, Eddy Martinez-Esteve blasted his 12th home run of the season while Nate Schierholtz chipped in three hits.
Bateman surrendered a run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Kevin Melillo drove home Eddie Cornejo with a single into center field. Lloyd Turner was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with none out. After Richie Robnett flied out, Danny Putnam drew a walk to load the bases. But Bateman responded with a strike out of Dustin Majewski, the leading home run hitter for the Ports, before Matt Allegra flied out to left field. For Bateman, it was his 12th save of the season.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Giants scored a run in the top of the third inning against Stockton starting pitcher Brad Knox. Guillermo Rodriguez led off with a double and then scored on John Bowker's clutch two-out double off of the wall in right field.
The Ports went ahead for the first time with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning as Melillo and Robnett each connected for solo home runs off of Jesse Floyd. But Floyd would not allow a run for the remainder of his outing as he picked up his ninth win of the year. The right-hander went five innings allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and seven strike outs.
San Jose went back in front with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Brian Buscher led off with a walk and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Schierholtz was up next and the Giants DH grounded a double down the right field line to score Buscher tying the game at 3-3. Schierholtz would later score on a Guillermo Rodriguez sacrifice fly.
The Giants scored their final run of the game when Martinez-Esteve launched a solo home run to right center field in the top of the eighth inning.
Jason Waddell (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) and Jon Coutlangus (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) combined for three scoreless innings out of the bullpen before Bateman came on in the ninth.
Multi-hit games for the Giants came from Schierholtz (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Todd Jennings (2-for-4). Clay Timpner saw his 13-game hitting streak come to an end after finishing 0-for-5.
