New York Boulders News Release

Rockland County, NY - Kevonte Mitchell's sixth inning grand slam broke open the contest and gave the New York Boulders a 8-1 win over the New Jersey Jackals in the second game of a Frontier League doubleheader at Palisades Credit Union Park on Friday.

The victory gave the Boulders a split of the twinbill with New Jersey, which coasted to a 12-1 win in game one.

Mitchell's grand slam broke the game open and gave the Boulders a commanding 8-1 lead.

In the sixth, with the Boulders leading 4-1, Brandon Bingel walked with one out. One out later, Milton Smith, Jr. drew a walk from Jackals' reliever Sam Mercedes. Zach Kirtley followed with a grounder to New Jersey's Riley Mihalik at third. However, Bingel outraced Mihalik to the bag at third to keep the inning alive.

Mitchell then hit the next pitch into the bleachers in left field. The home run was Mitchell's first of the season.

New York scored four runs in the home half of the first inning. With one out, Zach Kirtley walked. Kevonte Mitchell then doubled high off the left field wall to score Kirtley.

After a Jack Sundberg groundout, Zach Penprase's groundball to third was thrown away by the Jackals' T.J. Ward, the miscue allowing Mitchell to score.

Tucker Nathans doubled to score Penprase, then Ray Hernandez blooped a double down the line in right to plate Nathans and give the Boulders a 4-1 lead.

Those four runs were all that Jackals' starter Chase Ingram would allow in his five innings of work. He surrendered five hits, but walked six. Ingram struck out three and was tagged with the loss.

New Jersey had struck for a run in the top of the first on consecutive singles by Santiago Chirino, Russ Olive and Alfredo Marte, who picked up the RBI.

Orsen Josephina went the first four innings for New York and allowed the only New Jersey run.

Nathan Alexander, the third of four Boulders' pitchers, got the win, going 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Jackals had rolled to an easy 12-1 win in the first game behind 14 hits, including home runs from Russ Olive, Alfredo Marte and Jason Agresti, and six innings of one-run, four-hit pitching from starter Jared Milch.

A first inning RBI single by Santiago Chirino staked New Jersey to a quick 1-0 lead. It grew to 4-0 in the second inning as the Jackals got an RBI double by Demetrius Moorer, a run-scoring groundout from Chris Carpio and an RBI single by Marte.

A Carpio RBI single made it 5-0 in the third.

Olive's solo home run, his second of the year, increased the Jackals advantage to 6-0 in the fourth.

Zach Penprase got the Boulders on the board with a long home run to left field, his first of the season, in the bottom of the fifth.

New Jersey, though, came right back with five runs in the sixth inning, all on home runs - a three-run shot by Marte and a two-run blast by Agresti. The home run was Marte's fourth of the year, while Agresti's was his first.

Marte finished the opening game with four RBIs, while Agresti and Chirino each had three hits

Ben Strahm took the loss for the Boulders, going the first 2 2/3 innings and allowing six runs - four earned, on seven hits.

Milch picked up the win. Reece Karalus tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the victory for the Jackals,

The Boulders and Jackals continue their four-game weekend series with a game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. They conclude the series with a Sunday matinee, start time is set for 1:30 p.m.
