Florence Y'alls News Release
MARION, IL - After not scoring for four consecutive innings, Florence recorded back-to-back infield hits to open the top of the ninth inning and brought home the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice ground out by Jordan Brower to lift the Y'alls to a 3-2 victory over Southern Illinois Friday night at Rent One Park.
The Y'alls (11-4) get back in the win column after yesterday's loss to Evansville, and they have now beaten the Miners in four consecutive games to open their matchups in 2021. Southern Illinois drops to 5-9.
After each team scored runs in the first inning, there was no indication the game would be a pitcher's duel. Florence struck immediately in the top of the first inning with a Trevor Craport RBI-double as part of a three-hit inning. The Miners responded immediately in their first at-bats, taking a 2-1 lead on an RBI-double by Nolan Earley and an RBI-single off the bat of Ian Walters.
Both starting pitchers, however, would really settle into their outings, and both worked into the seventh inning. Jonaiker Villalobos got the start for Florence and lasted six 2/3 innings. The southpaw allowed seven hits and two walks but struck out four. After the first inning, Villalobos did not allow a run, though he did have to dance out of danger and strand the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
Chase Cunningham, coming off a seven inning no-decision versus Lake Erie, picks up another tough no-decision tonight. The righty tossed seven innings, allowed five hits, walked just one, and struck out five (season-high). Cunningham allowed the tying run in the fourth inning on a Will Bake safety squeeze after Harrison DiNicola led off the inning with a double.
Alex Wagner and Jared Cheek pitched the final two 2/3 innings for the Y'alls, walking nobody and not allowing a hit. Wagner grabs his first professional victory, and Cheek picks up his first save of the campaign. Joey Pulido gets hit with the loss for allowing the go-ahead run in the ninth inning.
DiNicola and Craport each recorded two hits apiece for Florence, as did Yeltsin Gudiño and Ian Walters for Southern Illinois.
The two teams square off again tomorrow night, Saturday, June 12, for a 6:05p CT / 7:05p ET first pitch. Kevin Hahn gets the ball for the Y'alls.
