Miners Stumble in Ninth, Lose to Florence

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners surrendered a go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and lost 3-2 at Rent One Park to the Florence Y'Alls in the opener of their three-game weekend series.
The visitors got things started in the top of the first inning against Chase Cunningham, plating the game's first run on three straight hits, including an RBI double by Trevor Craport. But the Miners responded in kind in the bottom of the first against Y'Alls starter Jonaiker Villalobos- with two outs, Nolan Earley doubled down the right field line to score Yeltsin Gudino and make it 1-1. Two batters later, Ian Walters gave the Miners the lead with an RBI single to center field at 2-1.
Both pitchers settled in from there. Florence scratched across the tying run in the fourth inning, making it 2-2, but got nothing more off Cunningham, who pitched his second-straight seven-inning start, allowing just two runs on five hits along with a season-high five strikeouts. Villalobos worked into the seventh inning for Florence, and the Miners had chances to take the lead against him with a runner at third base and one out in both the fifth and seventh innings, but could not bring that run in.
In the top of the ninth against Joey Pulido (0-1), Craport reached on an infield single and went to second on a wild pitch before going to third on another infield hit by Harrison DiNicola. Jordan Brower scored the go-ahead run with a groundout, and in the bottom half the Miners were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth, sending them to the defeat.
Southern Illinois will look to even the series against Florence on Saturday, June 12, at 6:05 p.m. at Rent One Park.
