Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - Calvin Mitchell's two-run double in the eighth was all the offense West Virginia could muster, as the Power dropped Sunday's middle match, 7-2, to the Hagerstown Suns this afternoon at Appalachian Power Park.
Carlos Pena walked Rodolfo Castro and Oneil Cruz with two outs in the eighth before Mitchell popped up a ball that found the right field grass between the second baseman, Cole Freeman, and the right fielder, Gage Canning, scoring both runners and cutting Hagerstown's lead to 5-2 at that juncture. Mitchell registered his ninth multi-RBI game of the season with his two-run two-bagger.
Both starters were rolling out of the gates as Travis MacGregor (1-2) and Malvin Pena (1-0) faced just one more than the minimum through the first three innings.
In the fourth, after Cole Freeman was hit by a pitch and Branden Boggetto singled, MacGregor fielded a bunt attempt from Jake Scuddder and made an errant throw past Cruz, who was covering second. That error ended up hurting the Power (9-8, 46-37), as Freeman scored the Suns first run of the game and Boggetto was safe at second. Boggetto would later score on a sacrifice fly from Paul Panaccione to make it 2-0 Hagerstown.
MacGregor finished his day after tossing five innings for the second straight start, allowing three hits and striking out six Suns (6-11, 33-52) sluggers.
Hagerstown put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning, tacking on three more runs to increase their lead to 5-0. Ike Schlabach retired the first two batters he faced, but began to unravel after a Scudder single. Nick Choruby singled, after which Schlabach walked both Panaccione and Omar Meregildo. Meregildo's walk scored Scudder, and Alex Flores then stroked a single to right field to score Choruby and Panaccione.
They would add another pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Freeman roped a one-out double and scored on a Boggetto single. Boggetto came around later in the frame on Panaccione's run-scoring knock with two away, giving Hagerstown a 7-2 lead.
West Virginia wraps up its seires with the Hagerstown Suns Monday evening at Appalachian Power Park, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. LHP Domingo Robles (6-5. 3.19 ERA) gets the nod for the Power, while Hagerstown counters with RHP Brigham Hill (0-2, 3.18 ERA).
