Missouri Clinches First Round Series With Win Over RiverKings

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings saw their 2009-2010 season come to an end on Thursday, March 25th, as the Missouri Mavericks clinched a first-round playoff series two games to one with a 3-1 victory at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.

MIssouri moves on to play in the Central Hockey League Northern Conference semi-finals against the Rapid City Rush, with game one of the best-of-seven series being played Saturday night.

Missouri moved out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Brett Hammond and a power play goal from Bill Vandermeer.

The Mavericks increased the lead to 3-0 early in the second period on a goal from Braden Walls at 3:00 of the middle session.

Mississippi finally got on the board when Stephen Margeson scored his first playoff goal, assisted by Andrew Lackner and Elias Godoy at 12:50 of the frame for what became the final margin.

There was no scoring in the third period, despite the RiverKings outshooting the Mavericks by a 17-9 margin.

Mississippi failed to score on the power play in five chances, while the game-winning goal for Missouri came on the power play, one of four opportunities the Mavericks had.

The RiverKings outshot the Mavericks for the game 37-34.

The loss finished the RiverKings' fourth straight appearance in the CHL post-season, and 12th as a franchise.
