Missions Walk off 'Hounds with Naylor's Double in Ninth
April 27, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
Before a rowdy Friday night Wolff Stadium crowd of 5,416, San Antonio edged Midland 4-3 on Josh Naylor's walk-off double in the ninth.
The RockHounds struck first in Friday's opener against righty Cal Quantrill courtesy of Richie Martin's single in the second.
San Antonio knotted the score at one in the third with Ty France's clutch, two-out, RBI-single up the middle off right-hander Kyle Friedrichs. The 'Hounds would retake the lead in the fifth on a J.P. Sportman single to deep short.
In the bottom of the frame against reliever Nolan Blackwood, San Antonio quickly fought back, taking a 3-2 lead with Kyle Overstreet's two-run single to center.
Quantrill impressed the large Wolff crowd in the opener, allowing just the two runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out four over six innings. The talented righty was in line for a win until a Midland rally in the ninth against lefty Jose Castillo.
With two on and one out, Martin singled to left. Naylor, without the threat of lead runner, Brett Vertigan trying to score, airmailed a throw back into the infield. The errant throw sailed over the head of Overstreet at the plate, allowing Vertigan to score the tying run. Castillo (2-1) would escape further trouble in the ninth, giving his offense a chance to end it.
And that they did. Fernando Tatis Jr. began the rally with a one-out walk against J.B. Wendelken (0-1). That brought up Naylor, who redeemed himself by shooting a double down the left-field line, scoring Tatis Jr. from first and ending a dramatic series opener.
San Antonio (12-9) resumes its four-game series with Midland (12-9) Saturday at 7:05 PM. Miguel Diaz (1-1, 1.46) will get the ball for the Missions, while the RockHounds counter with fellow righty Joel Seddon (2-1, 5.16). The Missions will be wearing special Fiesta-themed jerseys that will be auctioned off throughout the night with all the proceeds going to Autism Community Network. After the game there will be a special fireworks show courtesy of Autism Community Network.
