Missions Rally Comes up Just Short as Naturals Avoid Sweep at the Wolff
July 6, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio's hopes for a three-game sweep of Northwest Arkansas came up just short in a 3-2 loss Friday night before 4,853 at Wolff Stadium.
Logan Allen took the hill Friday evening, looking to build on his Texas League-leading win total. However, the lefty's night got off to a rocky start as the Naturals jumped the All-Star hurler for three runs on three hits in the first, highlighted by Elier Hernandez's two-RBI double to left.
Though he fell into an early hole, Allen composed himself well, retiring the Naturals in order in each of the next three innings. Allen allowed just one hit after the first in his six innings of work in addition to punching out seven. The quick recovery by Allen (8-4) allowed for his offense to slowly chip away against fellow southpaw Emilio Ogando.
After being stymied over the first five innings, San Antonio finally broke through in the sixth when catcher Austin Allen opened the frame with a solo blast to right center. It was the team-leading 16th homer on the year for Allen. Kyle Overstreet followed with a double, but Ogando (5-5) squashed more trouble when he picked the first baseman off at second.
San Antonio cut the deficit to 3-2 in the seventh against lefty Gabe Speier when Josh Naylor drove home Michael Gettys from second with a single to left.
The Missions threatened in the ninth, drawing consecutive two-out walks off Yunior Marte. However, Marte (1st save) closed out the game when he induced Ty France to bounce into a fielder's choice.
San Antonio (8-7, 50-35) continues its homestand Saturday with the first of three against Arkansas (9-5, 44-40). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Chris Paddack will get the ball for the Missions in a much-anticipated Double-A debut for the Austin, TX native. Max Povse (4-2, 2.90) will get the start for the Travelers. Following the game there will be a fireworks show courtesy of Central Catholic High School. The Missions will be wearing a special "Alamo City" jerseys Saturday that will be auctioned off throughout the night with all the proceeds going to CCHS.
