Cardinals Drop Game, Series to RoughRiders

Springfield Cardinals News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Outhitting opponents hasn't meant outscoring them pretty frequently this season for Springfield, and the same came true Thursday.

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the third and ninth innings in a 4-2 loss to Frisco but managed just a single run in both situations, dropping the second game of a three-game series against the RoughRiders in front of 4,853 fans at Hammons Field.

Both bases-loaded situations came with just a single out but Frisco pitchers managed to escape each with a double play.

Springfield outhit Frisco 10-7 and reached on a pair of errors.

Frisco did all its damage for the night in the third, starting with Cardinals killer Preston Beck's solo homer putting the RoughRiders up 1-0. Later in the inning, Juremi Profar drove in Michael O'Neill with a single to right and later scored on a Luis Mendez single into center that opened the lead to 3-0.

Tommy Edman ended the shutout when he rocketed a triple into the gap in right with an out in the seventh that brought Blake Drake in from first and pulled the Cardinals within 3-1.

The RoughRiders padded their lead to 4-1 with a Jurami Profar sacrifice fly in the eighth.

After a Drake double, an Edman walk and a Lane Thomas single loaded the bases in the ninth, Andrew Knizner drew a walk that brought the Cardinals within 4-2. That final was cemented when Anthony Gose got Chris Chinea to ground to second for the game-ending double play.

Anthony Shew (4-4) pitched seven strong innings for Springfield, allowing three runs on five hits and seven strikeouts to no walks.

RoughRiders starter Tyler Davis (1-6) tossed six shutout innings for his first win of the season.
