Chanclas Sweep Doubleheader with Another Extra-Inning Thriller

July 6, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio took advantage of a late error to sweep its Thursday doubleheader against Northwest Arkansas with a 4-3 win.

Offense was at a premium early in Thursday's nightcap, beginning with Chanclas righty T.J. Weir and his mound opponent Pedro Fernandez.

Weir was very good in a spot start for the Chanclas, allowing just one hit through three. Northwest Arkansas plated the game's first run off Weir in the fourth courtesy of an Alex Liddi single up the middle.

Like Weir, Fernandez also went three and two-thirds innings. The Puerto Plata, DR native pitched to more contact in his time on the hill, scattering five hits, but keeping the Chanclas from scoring.

The Chanclas finally found the equalizer in the sixth when Nick Schulz drove in pinch runner Michael Gettys with a single to left off reliever Franco Terrero.

After both teams failed to score in the seventh, the game once again transitioned to extras. This time around, Northwest Arkansas would strike first, taking a 3-1 lead on righty Gerardo Reyes with a combination of three hits and a pair of errors.

Not to be outdone, the Chanclas countered in its half of the eighth, tying the game at three with a clutch, two-out, two-run homer to right by Nick Schulz off Terrero.

Colby Blueberg (1-0) kept the Naturals off the board in the ninth and his offense would cash in on its next opportunity. Righty Bryan Brickhouse entered for Northwest Arkansas and first faced Rod Boykin. With Matthew Batten at second, Boykin dropped down a bunt. Brickhouse (0-3) fielded the ball, but his throw sailed high, allowing Batten to score the winning run.

San Antonio (8-6, 50-34) concludes its three-game series with Northwest Arkansas (2-10, 37-45) Friday at 7:05 PM. The first 2,000 fans to enter The Wolff will receive a FREE Paul Lo Duca SA Missions Black Alternate Jersey courtesy of McCombs Ford West. Logan Allen (8-3, 2.66) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Naturals counter with fellow southpaw Emilio Ogando (4-5, 6.71).
