Missions Hold off Express to Stay Alive

San Antonio Missions News Release

ROUND ROCK - Ben Gamel reached base five times and scored five runs to help the Missions stave off an Express rally and stay alive in the division race with a 14-8 win Wednesday night at Dell Diamond.

Gamel slugged one of three homers that the Missions hit on the night, while Travis Shaw and Tyler Austin also went deep for San Antonio. The Missions started the night having scored seven runs over the three previous games while going 15-for-89 at the plate.

Bubba Derby (7-7) picked up the win in relief after starter Aaron Wilkerson battled his command and was lifted after 3 2/3 innings. Wilkerson matched a career high with five walks.

San Antonio nearly blew a 10-2 lead in the seventh inning when Round Rock rallied for six runs thanks in part to a pair of two-run homers off reliever Angel Perdomo.

The win pulls San Antonio to within two games of the Express with five to play, including Thursday's series finale. San Antonio still faces an uphill battle in their pursuit of a division crown. Even if they capture their final five games, Round Rock would need to lose at least two of four this weekend against an Omaha squad that sports the worst record in the PCL at 57-77.
