Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - The Hammerheads lost their fifth straight contest in frustrating fashion as they allowed four unearned runs in a 4-3 loss to Lakeland on Wednesday night.
Despite tying a season-high with four errors, the Sharks still found themselves very much in the game at the end. Thanks to a pair of ninth inning singles Jupiter had the winning run on base with two outs in the final frame but Antonio Nesbitt struck out Ryan Goetz to end the game.
After Jupiter had broken through first in the second inning thanks to a RBI single by Ryan Rieger, some sloppy play seemingly gave the game away.
In the third inning the Flying Tigers had runners on the corners thanks to a ground rule double and a single but it looked like Hammerheads starter Trevor Williams would get out of the jam. With one out Williams got Connor Harrell to pop up to the first baseman before Austin Green hit a grounder to short. When the ball ate up Terrence Dayleg, Jeff McVaney scored with the tying run.
In the fourth another error ended up haunting the Hammerheads. With a runner on first and one out, Colin Moran bobbled a grounder by Chad Wright and had no play at any base. After a strikeout McVaney walked to load the bases and Lance Durham made the Sharks pay for the error as he lined a single up the box to drive in a pair.
The errors kept piling on in the seventh inning. After Harrell reached on a one-out single, Green hit a single to left and when Matt Juengel couldn't come up with the ball cleanly, Harrell advanced to third.
It looked like the Hammerheads might be saved when James Robbins hit a grounder right at the second baseman Noah Perio, but he couldn't play the ball cleanly. Although Perio was not charged with an error on the play as he got the out at first, it was a chance for an inning ending double play. Instead Harrell scored with Lakeland's fourth run.
That run would end up being the difference in the ballgame.
Jupiter would make a bit of a comeback in the bottom of the eighth and it seemed to be sparked by some terrific defense in the top of the frame. With one out and Tyler Hanover on second, Curt Powell hit a single to right. Hanover was waved home on the play but Jesus Solorzano threw a perfect strike home to nail Hanover at the plate.
Two batters later, Durham would hit a screaming liner to center in which Goetz ran to his left and made a terrific diving catch to end the inning.
In the bottom of the half of the inning the Sharks came out swinging as Dayleg and Perio reached on back-to-back singles to start things. Two batters later Moran would make it 4-2 when he pulled a single into right.
After the Flying Tigers went to the bullpen Austin Barnes would hit a bullet into left center to plate Perio and make it a one run game. But the rally would not continue as Viosergy Rosa and Juengel were both retired and when the final ninth inning comeback could not be completed Jupiter lost its season-high fifth straight.
Kevin Eichhorn picked up the win after he limited the Hammerheads to just one run in seven innings.
Williams took the loss although he did not allow an earned run in four innings.
Jupiter and Lakeland will continue the series on Thursday morning. It will be the final Education Day of the season at Roger Dean Stadium so there will be a special 10:35 a.m. start time.
WP: Kevin Eichhorn (4-0)
LP: Trevor Williams (5-4)
S: Angel Nesbitt (10)
