
Tampa Falls to Bradenton in Extras, 9-6

TAMPA, Fla. - After an hour and 52-minute rain delay, the Tampa Yankees (26-25) and the Bradenton Marauders (25-26) began a four-game series with an 8:52 first pitch on Tuesday. The game didn't end until 12:42 p.m. on Wednesday morning as the Marauders took a 9-6 win in 12 innings at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Bradenton scored an early run to get on the board first. Taylor Lewis led off the game by reaching on an error at third by Dante Bichette Jr. A double by Max Moroff later scored Lewis, giving the Marauders a 1-0 lead.
Tampa quickly answered with a two-run first against Bradenton starter Jason Creasy. Jake Cave and Cito Culver each singled to begin the frame. A groundout by Greg Bird advanced the runners before Bichette gave the Yankees a lead with a two-RBI single to right.
A run in the second tied the score for the Marauders. With a runner on second, Lewis hit a two-out RBI single, tying the game at 2-2.
Bradenton chased Tampa starter Miguel Sulbaran out of the game on the fifth. The Marauders strung together five straight singles to begin the inning, scoring two runs before RHP Brett Gerritse relieved Sulbaran. A groundball double play by Jeff Roy drove in another run before Gerritse struck out Walker Gourley to end the frame.
Sulbaran allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits in over four innings of work. The southpaw walked one and struck out one in the no-decision.
The Yankees cut the deficit to one by scoring twice in the home half of the fifth. Claudio Custodio and Cave began the frame with singles. Culver then singled to right, scoring Custodio from second. Cave later scored on a sacrifice fly by Bichette
Creasy yielded four runs on eight hits in four and a third innings for the Marauders. The righty walked one and struck out three.
Bradenton regained a two-run lead after scoring an unearned run in the sixth. Lewis reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild throw by Gerritse. Lewis later scored on an RBI groundout to second by Josh Bell, giving the Marauders a 6-4 lead.
Tampa rallied against RHP BrytonTrepagnier in the eighth. Zach Wilson and Danny Oh singled to begin the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Trent Garrison placed both runners in scoring position. A groundout by Custodio scored Wilson. After a walk by Cave, Oh scored on a single by Culver, tying the game at 6-6.
The Marauders had a runner reach third base in the first seven inning of the game before the bullpen for the Yankees combined to retire 15 straight batters from the final out of the seventh to two outs in the 12th. Nick Goody pitched a shutout frame in the eighth. Phil Wetherell dealt two perfect frames in the ninth and tenth. Stefan Lopez (0-1) retired the first five batters he faced.
Bradenton hit four consecutive singles in a two-out rally against Lopez in the 12th. Jin-De Jhang singled and stole second. D.J. Crumlich followed with an RBI single and advanced on a throw home. Jeff Roy traded places with Crumlich, singling to center and reaching second on a throw home. Gourley added the final run to the board with an RBI single to center, scoring Roy.
RHP Ryan Hafner (1-1) held Tampa scoreless for all three extra innings. Hafner scattered two hits and tallied a season-high five strikeouts.
Bichette drove in three runs and now has at least one RBI in seven straight games. Culver led the offense in hits, going 4-for-6 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
The T-Yanks continue the series against the Marauders on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. for the second Education Day at Steinbrenner Field. Southpaw Conner Kendrick (1-1, 3.52 ERA) will get the start for Tampa. Righty Tyler Glasnow (0-3, 3.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for Bradenton.
