FORT WAYNE, IN - A costly mistake led the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 3-1 defeat by the Fort Wayne TinCaps in front of 8,497 fans at Parkview Field Thursday night.

Fort Wayne scored first in the opening inning, but did so in an unusual way. Starting pitcher Eudis Idrogo issued a balk, allowing Ruddy Giron to score and give Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead. The score stayed the same until the fifth when Arvicent Perez lined a game-tying RBI-single into right field, tying the ballgame at one. Fort Wayne took the lead in the eighth inning with runners at first and second when Marcus Greene popped up a bunt down the first base line. Whitecaps first baseman Will Allen elected to let the bunt fall in front of him, then sent the ensuing throw into right field allowing Austin Allen to score the go-ahead run and give the TinCaps a 2-1 advantage. An RBI-double by Jhonatan Pena gave Fort Wayne an insurance run to take a 3-1 edge, ending the scoring in the contest.

Both starters pitched well in the contest, as Idrogo gave up only one run in 5.2 innings and striking out three while Jerry Keel carried a perfect game into the fifth and allowed a run in seven impressive innings for the TinCaps. David Bednar (1-2) earned his first win with a pair of scoreless innings for Fort Wayne, while Logan Longwith (0-2) took his second loss of 2016. The TinCaps improve to 12-21 in the second half, and 48-55 on the season. West Michigan falls to 14-16 in the back half of 2016, and 53-44 overall. Perez and Brett Pirtle each had a pair of hits to lead the 'Caps offense in a losing cause.
