Minnesota United FC at Detroit City FC Preview
April 25, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Minnesota United FC News Release
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Hoping to secure a victory after three consecutive losses, Minnesota United set their sights on their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Third Round fixture with Detroit City FC at Keyworth Stadium on Tuesday night. In this first-ever matchup between the clubs, the unfamiliar foes will face-off for the chance to move onto the Round of 32. Detroit has proven to be a tough opponent, beating the Columbus Crew last year, 2-1, in the Third Round. The Loons seek a victory after their first shutout of the season on Saturday against Seattle Sounders FC, a narrow 1-0 loss for the Black and Blue. MNUFC looks to be strong in the final third and continue with its solid defensive structure this week to reign triumphant in Michigan.
ADRIAN HEATH ON THE APPROACH TO FACING DETROIT CITY...
"I say this all the time - and I'm not being disrespectful to my group, and I'm sure everyone else will be saying it - there's not many teams in MLS who can actually play professional players of a USL nature, and if they [MLS players] play at 50, 60 percent of their capabilities, go and win the game. It's just not that way. Sacramento [Republic FC] nearly went all the way last year with two or three MLS teams along the way. This is nothing new. We know what we're going to expect tomorrow night. We're going to approach this game exactly as we do any MLS opposition. We give Detroit, like we did [Union] Omaha and Forward Madison, the same respect, and we've done everything the same. We've had them [players] watch video, the players know what's coming. We can prepare. But, mentally if you're not ready for what's going to come and be thrown at you, then it can be a really difficult night."
ADRIAN HEATH ON HIS EXPECTAIONS GOING INTO KEYWORTH STADIUM...
"No different. I've known Trevor [James] a long time. He worked with Wato [Mark Watson] and Frank Yallop down in San Jose and I think he was at [LA] Galaxy with him for a while. So, he's highly experienced. He'll know and he'll get his players revved-up for the game like they did last year against Columbus [Crew]. It was a difficult night - I looked at the game this week. It looks like they [Detroit] have a really good atmosphere here; they've got good crowds. I expect it to be a really big [U.S. Open] Cup night, which is what you expect for these games. This is what makes Cup football so exciting. Anything can happen. As I've said before, we've treated Detroit the same respect as we do anybody else. Now, the mindset has to be right, and if it is, I think we give ourselves a good chance at winning. If it isn't, it could become a long night for us like it did for Columbus last year."
