Minnesota Lynx News Release
Minneapolis/St. Paul - The Minnesota Lynx today announced the team has re-signed guard Navonda Moore and signed free-agent center Marita Payne. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed. An undrafted rookie in 2007 out of the University of Alabama, Moore appeared in 19 games for the Lynx. The 5-10 guard averaged 1.1 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.2 assists in 4.6 minutes per game.
"I am happy to be coming back to the Lynx in 2008," Moore said. "I was very thankful for the opportunity that Coach Zierden gave me last year and I really had a wonderful time last summer with my Lynx teammates. I am ready to show people what kind of player I am. I want to help the team in any way that the coaches ask of me. With a year under my belt, I had a chance in 2007 to see different things and to be put in different situations that made me a better player and person. I am ready to get started."
With Alabama, Moore led the Crimson Tide with a career-high 13.6 ppg in her senior season (2006-07). She also contributed 4.1 rpg and 1.7 apg. In her college career, the 23-year-old played in 107 games and averaged 11.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 1.4 apg. She shot 40.6 percent from the field while knocking down 29.5 percent of her 3-point attempts.
Payne, a 6-5 center and 2006 graduate of Auburn University, averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds and totaled a school-record 377 blocks during four seasons. The Australia native averaged 7.9 points and 6.5 rebounds as a senior. In her junior season (2004-05), Payne led the nation with 141 blocks.
Payne was drafted by the Connecticut Sun in the third round (42nd overall) of the 2006 WNBA Draft. She spent the 2007-08 season with the Bendigo Spirit of the WNBL in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. She averaged 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds in 14 games with the Spirit.
