MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL-The Minnesota Lynx today announced that they will team with the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women (MCBW) and the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA) to host a Choose Respect Night in cooperation with Verizon Wireless.

Choose Respect Night, scheduled for the Lynx' game against the Seattle Storm on August 1, is the kickoff event of a public awareness campaign in Minnesota for the Centers for Disease Control's Choose Respect Initiative.

Choose Respect is a statewide campaign to motivate adolescents ages 11-14 to challenge harmful beliefs about dating abuse and sexual violence and take steps to form respectful relationships. Twenty-three MCBW and MNCASA member programs throughout Minnesota will hold education events for community youth between August and October 2006.

Verizon Wireless and the Minnesota Lynx will present a check for $10,000 to the Coalition prior to tip-off August 1, to fund the game night event and the Verizon Wireless/Minnesota Lynx Teen Leadership Summit in the winter of 2007. At the Leadership Summit, selected youth from all over Minnesota will receive training on how to organize their peers and communities to end sexual assault and domestic violence.

"The Lynx are glad we have the opportunity to encourage the young people of our community to respect each other when dating," said Timberwolves and Lynx President Chris Wright. "We all have differences and unique character traits, but we should never condone violence or inappropriate behavior."

The Lynx Kickoff Event will feature the Minnesota premiere of the Choose Respect television public service announcement. Teens and parents attending the Kickoff Event will receive Choose Respect educational materials, such as pocket guides and bookmarks for teens, and magnetic picture frames for parents. Verizon Wireless has also provided mesh backpacks for the first 1,000 game attendees and tickets for 100 Minnesota youth and coalition members to attend the basketball game.

"We are very appreciative of Verizon Wireless and the Minnesota Lynx's support of the Choose Respect Initiative," said Dresden Jones of MNCASA. "Verizon Wireless and the Lynx are investing in Minnesota's youth by teaching them how to develop respectful dating relationships."
