Minicozzi Homers Twice in 14-5 Win

July 11, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Matt McDonald picked up his first win and Mark Minicozzi hit two homers in a 14-5 Worcester rout of the New Jersey Jackals on Monday. McDonald had his best and longest outing of the year, going seven strong innings, allowing six hits and two runs (both earned). He retired 11 batters in a row from the first through fourth innings and evened his record at (1-1).

Minicozzi hit two homers in as many innings, nailing an opposite-field two-run homer in the sixth and a three-run job to left in the next frame. The third baseman's two bombs accounted for half of the team's homers, as Alex Trezza broke the scoreless tie with a two-run dinger in the second and Chris Colabello hit a homer for the second game in a row.

The Tornadoes scored the first seven runs of the game before New Jersey added a pair in the fifth. Worcester added another couple of big innings, plating four in the sixth and three in the seventh inning before allowing a three-run ninth.

Mike Gedman pitched a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout and Ryan Lobban returned from an injury he suffered against the Jackals in New Jersey by pitching the ninth.

Every single Tornadoes hitter that started the game reached base at least once, with all but Nick Salotti reaching twice or more. Cameron Monger went 3-for-3 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. The Worcester centerfielder had two runs scored, a run batted in plus a stolen base and a triple.

The final game of the series is on Tuesday at 7:05pm, as Kevin Cooper gets the nod for Worcester in the Tornadoes attempt to record their second home series sweep this season (the first coming against the New York Federals in the first three home games of the year).
