New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, N.J. - On Monday, New Jersey Jackals' southpaw James Leverton was named the Pointstreak Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week.

The 25-year-old, in the Jackals' 4-0 win over first-place Quebec Friday, tossed eight shutout innings allowing only one walk and four hits while striking out 12 batters. Leverton is currently 6-2 on the year with an earned run average of 2.12. He is tied for second in the Can-Am in wins, is third in ERA and tied for third in strikeouts with 51.

Leverton also earned the award last Monday after going 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA in two starts during the week ending July 3.

An eighth-round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2008 out of Texas Tech, Leverton combined to go 10-1 with a 2.75 ERA in 49 relief appearances in 2010 as he split the season between three levels in the Cubs' minor league system. He spent his first three professional seasons with the Cubs, advancing as high as Double-A before joining the Jackals for the 2011 campaign.

Leverton is the third different New Jersey hurler to be honored by the league this season, joining Isaac Pavlik (June Pitcher of the Month) and Jeff Gogal (June 6 Pitcher of the Week).

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
