Sussex County Miners News Release
Augusta, NJ - The Sussex County Miners became the first team in the Can-Am League to clinch a playoff spot as they swept a doubleheader of the Rockland Boulders, winning the first game by a score of 2-0 before capturing the nightcap - and the playoff spot - by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday night at Skylands Stadium.
In the opener, the Miners got all the offense they would need in the bottom of the first inning when Audy Ciriaco would extend his hitting streak to sixteen games with a two-run home run, plating himself and Mikey Reynolds to put the Miners ahead 2-0. And those two runs were all that starter Andrew Vinson would need. Vinson recorded his league-leading fifth complete game of the year in shutting down the Boulders. Vinson would also record his league-leading third shutout of the year, which put him in a tie with several others in matching the Can-Am record for most shutouts in a single season.
The second game saw former Boulder Jared McDonald torment his former team with a three-hit performance. His first two hits would eventually lead to him scoring the Miners first two runs. Sussex County would plate two more in the sixth inning, first on a single by Christian Correa that, coupled with a throwing error, would score Martin Figueroa. Then Correa himself would score one batter later as Jarred Mederos would single up the middle to make the score 4-2 Miners. El'Hajj Muhammad would retire the Boulders in order in the top of the seventh to secure the Miners second playoff berth in as many years.
The Miners and Boulders will continue their four-game series tomorrow evening at Skylands Stadium, with a 7:05 first pitch scheduled.
