Sussex County Miners News Release

AUGUSTA, NJ - The Sussex County Miners nearly came back again against the Quebec Capitales, but fell in the series finale at Skylands Stadium, 6-5.

Quebec (16-10) got the scoring started in the top of the third. After a one-out single by Jonathan Malo and a double by Alexei Bell, Tim Smith hit an RBI groundout that scored Malo with the game's first run.

The Capitales added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Nic Cuckovich, but the Miners (9- 16) responded in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Devin Thaut lined a single to left and Reggie Abercrombie followed with a double to put two in scoring position. Kenny Bryant then jolted a liner to right-centerfield to score both runners and tie the game at 2-2.

Quebec jumped back out on top in the fifth, however. With two men on and nobody out, Josue Peley drove home Alexei Bell with an RBI double. Shortly thereafter, Miners starting pitcher Matt Branham committed a balk to score Tim Smith and the Capitales led, 4-2.

After the Capitales struck for two more runs in the top of the seventh, the Miners made a comeback bid. Down by four runs in the bottom of the seventh, Cory Morales roped a one-out single and Rey Otero followed with a single of his own. That set up Johnny Bladel and Ryan Pineda, who hit back-to-back RBI doubles. The twin two-baggers cut the Quebec lead to 6-4.

Following a 1:22 minute rain delay, the Miners further trimmed the Quebec advantage to 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth on an error by Nic Cuckovich that scored Abercrombie, but that was as close as the Miners came to tying the score. Deryk Hooker closed the game out in the ninth, leaving the potential tying run on second base for his league-leading eighth save.

Karl Gelinas earned the win for Quebec. The right-hander allowed four runs in 6.2 innings. Gelinas (5-0) gave up 11 hits and struck out two. Branham (0-1) took the loss. He pitched six innings and also allowed four runs on 11 hits. The Miners' starter struck out two and walked one.

Prior to the start of the game, Miners manager Steve Shirley, along with Miners pitcher Tony Amezcua and Capitales pitcher Scott Moviel were ejected for an alleged confrontation before first pitch.

The Miners split the four-game series with Quebec and will go on to face Rockland on the road for a three-game set, beginning on Monday. First pitch at Provident Bank Park for the series opener is at 7 PM.
