New York Boulders News Release
(POMONA, NY) - Stifling pitching and late heroics lifted the Rockland Boulders over the Shikoku Island League All-Stars in a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Provident Bank Park. The Boulders' (17-10) held the All-Stars (3-7) to eight total runs in their four-game International Showcase series sweep.
The Boulders started hot in the first inning while loading the bases with one out against Shikoku Island starter Hayato Takeda. The All-Stars survived the inning without surrendering a run, however, as Marcus Nidiffer flew out to right before Stephen Cardullo was thrown out at home on a tag up attempt.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Nidiffer drove in Cardullo with a two-out double against Shikoku Island reliever Riku Akiyama for the game's first run. Cardullo is tied for second in the Can-Am with 22 runs scored in 2015.
Shikoku Island responded in the fourth when early singles off of Rockland starter Stephen Harrold loaded the corners for Yoshihiro Kobayashi who doubled-in Sho Haraguci to tie the game at 1-1.
Rockland squandered another scoring opportunity in the fifth when Steve Nyizstor and Joe Maloney started the inning with a walk and double respectively against All-Stars' reliever Shu Yoshida. Despite runners threatening on second and third, Yoshida retired the next three batters to leave the inning unscathed.
After four straight scoreless innings, the Boulders broke the tie and ended the game in the ninth inning on a Maloney two-out walk-off double against Shikoku Island reliever Noriyuki Kobayashi. Maloney leads the Can-Am with 26 RBI's this season.
Chad Robinson picked up the win for the Boulders with one scoreless inning of relief, while Harrold received no-decision after pitching seven innings and surrendering one run. The loss was charged to Kobayashi who gave up one run in two and two thirds innings of relief.
The Boulders will play their next game at home against the Sussex County Miners on Monday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at Provident Bank Park.
