Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release
The San Diego Padres announced Saturday that Padres pitcher Miguel Diaz is expected to join the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Sunday for a Major League Rehab Assignment. This will be the first Major League Rehabber sent to Amarillo's franchise. Diaz was placed on the 60-day injured list by San Diego on May 1 due to a torn meniscus.
Over his two-year MLB career, the reliever has accumulated a 2-1 record and 6.56 ERA (44 ER/60.1 IP), adding 63 strikeouts in 42 Major League appearances (3 starts).
The Dominican Republic native split the 2018 season between San Antonio (AA), El Paso (AAA) and San Diego. He went 1-0 with a 4.82 ERA (10 ER, 18.2 IP) in 11 relief appearances with the Padres. In his season debut with the Padres on July 8, 2018, at Arizona, he struck out five in two innings pitched becoming the first Padre to strike out at least five in 2.0 IP-or-less since Tyson Ross in 2013 on June 9 at San Francisco (1.2 IP). He earned his second big league win on September 26 at San Francisco, tossing 2.0 IP of hitless ball in San Diego's 3-2 victory.
With Double-A San Antonio in 2018, Diaz went 5-2 with a 2.35 ERA (17 ER, 65.0 IP) in his 19 appearances.
He was selected by Minnesota from Milwaukee first overall in the Major League Phase of the 2016 Rule 5 Draft and then acquired by San Diego from Minnesota in exchange for RHP Justin Haleyand cash on December 8. He made his MLB debut on April 3 at Los Angeles (LAD), tossing 1.1 perfect innings in relief with one strikeout.
Diaz was originally acquired by Milwaukee as a free agent on December 1, 2011, and made his professional debut for the DSL Brewers (R), making 15 relief appearances and one start with a 4.62 ERA (13 ER, 25.1 IP).
Diaz has five pitches in his arsenal: a four-seam fastball, slider, changeup, sinker, and curveball.
