Potts' Extra-Innings Blast Seals Walk-Off Series Win for Sod Poodles

Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release

AMARILLO, Texas - Padres' number-15 prospect Hudson Potts sealed the Sod Poodles series win over the Springfield Cardinals Friday night with a two-out, two-run, 11th-inning walk-off home run, marking the first walk-off win in franchise history. Potts fourth homer of the season capped off his 3-for-5, three RBI night in the 6-5 contest.

In the top of the first, the Cardinals, who went scoreless Thursday night for the second time in 2019, plated their first run Friday after Jose Godoy singled to bring in leadoff Kramer Roberton, who doubled and advanced to third on a balk.

In the bottom of the third, Amarillo joined in on the scoring with three runs of their own to take the lead. With one out, starting pitcher T.J. Weir struck a double to left field and was backed up by a single off the bat of Rodrigo Orozco to put runners on the corners. After a walk to Edward Olivares, Owen Miller grounded to third base but a throwing error to the plate by Evan Mendoza would allow two runs to score. Then, with two outs, Potts knocked an RBI single through the hole at shortstop to plate Olivares.

The Cardinals didn't waste any time getting back into an offensive rhythm. In the top of the fourth, Alberto Triunfel sparked a two-out rally with a double to left field while Scott Hurst did the same thing the very next at-bat. Springfield pitcher came up and helped his cause with a game-tying RBI single and even the match at 3-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Webster Rivas led off with a single to restart things. Following two quick outs after, hard-throwing reliever Andres Munoz hit a slow-bouncing RBI single to give the home team the 4-3 lead, marking Munoz's first career hit and RBI.

In the ninth, the Cardinals threatened at the get-go after Irving Lopez sent a leadoff double to right field. After Robertson reached on a fielder's choice after a failed force-out attempt at third base, Dylan Carlson knocked a grounder to shortstop Owen Miller who made an on-the-run throw to the plate to keep the lead. But after a strikeout swinging for the second out, Evan Mendoza singled to tie things up at 4-4.

The Sod Poodles were able to load the bases in the bottom half of the ninth with two outs but were unable to send a runner across as a groundout would end the threat.

For the third time in 2019, the Sod Poodles entered into an extra-inning contest.

After a scoreless tenth, the Cardinals were able to tally a run after a sacrifice bunt by Hurst and fielder's choice groundball with a close play at the play manufactured the go-ahead run.

Down one run, Sod Poodles batters Miller and Jorge Oña went down as two quick outs on strikeouts. With the tying run two bases away, Potts, who had two hits on the night, struck a 2-1 fastball deep and onto the right field lawn to walk-off the game 6-5, marking the first walk-off win as a franchise.

Side-arm specialist Kazuhisa Makita recorded his first win in 2019 after two and one-third innings in relief, giving up one run on one hit. Amarillo starter Weir held his own once again with a stellar five-inning performance, allowing seven hits and three runs with nine strikeouts. Munoz, Kyle Lloyd, and Travis Radke completed the list of arms from the bullpen Friday night.

The Sod Poodles will welcome the Seattle Mariners Double-A affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers, to town tomorrow to begin a four-game set at HODGETOWN. In game one, Sod Poodles right-hander Jesse Scholtens will face off against Arkansas southpaw Anthony Misiewicz. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

NOTES:

WALKOFF: The Amarillo Sod Poodles walked off the Springfield Cardinals Friday night in the 11th inning when Hudson Potts blasted a two-run home run to deep right field to give the Sod Poodles the 6-5 victory. The walk-off was the first ever in franchise history as well as the first-ever extra-innings win.

AGAIN!: Hudson Potts recorded his second game-winning hit Friday night when he belted a two-run walk-off home run off of Springfield reliever Seth Elledge. On April 24, Potts did the same exact thing when he hit a two-run home run off of Elledge to break a 2-2 tie and to give the Sod Poodles the 4-2 lead and eventual victory in Springfield.

Not Weir(d): T.J. Weir tossed five innings of seven-hit baseball Friday night at HODGETOWN. Weir only allowed three runs and struck out nine Cardinal batters. Weir's efforts wouldn't be good enough to pick up his third win of the season as he took the no-decision.

Pitchers Who Rake: Friday night's starter T.J. Weir and reliever Andres Munoz both helped themselves out as they recorded hits in the ballgame against the Cardinals. Weir roped a double to the left field wall in the bottom of the third inning. Then in the bottom of the sixth Munoz hit an RBI single to center field.

Keeping it 100: Hard-throwing Andres Munoz tossed his sixth-consecutive scoreless outing for Amarillo and recorded his first complete two-inning appearance ever in his career. Over his last six outings, he has combined for seven innings while allowing just two hits and three walks with 16 strikeouts.

That's A First: Reliever Andres Munoz recorded his first career hit and RBI on Friday night against the Springfield Cardinals. The RBI single to center field gave Amarillo a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Tomorrow's Preview: The Sod Poodles will welcome the Seattle Mariners Double-A affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers, to town tomorrow to begin a four-game set at HODGETOWN. In game one, Sod Poodles right-hander Jesse Scholtens will face off against Arkansas southpaw Anthony Misiewicz. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
