Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 9, 2014) - Winston-Salem allowed 10 Myrtle Beach runs between the fifth and seventh innings, leading to a 12-3 setback against the Pelicans at BB&T Ballpark on Wednesday night.
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Myrtle Beach (12-9, 56-33) unleashed an offensive surge against Dash starter Tony Bucciferro (6-8). Nick Williams led off the inning with a triple and scored on Jorge Alfaro's single to right. After Alfaro advanced to second on an error by right fielder Jason Coats, Preston Beck flared a single to right-center to chase Alfaro home, giving the visitors from the Grand Strand a 4-3 lead.
The Pelicans continued their rally with a double by Lewis Brinson, who was making his High-A debut, scoring Beck. Brinson advanced to third on a wild pitch by Bucciferro and came home on Edwin Garcia's groundout to short, giving the road team a 6-3 edge.
Myrtle Beach kept things rolling in the sixth. Christopher Bostick singled against Dash reliever Euclides Leyer to lead off the inning before Williams walked. A wild pitch moved the runners up a station, setting up men at second and third for Brinson. The 20-year-old singled to left field, plating Bostick and Williams for an 8-3 advantage.
The Pelicans tacked on some insurance runs in the seventh against Winston-Salem hurler Zach Isler. David Lyon was hit by a pitch and Garcia singled. Another error by Coats in right field moved the runners to second and third base. Chris Garia singled to right, scoring Lyon for a 9-3 lead. Bostick drilled a triple off the wall in straightaway center field, bringing two runs home. Williams finished the offensive explosion with a double to left, causing Bostick to trot home with a 12-3 cushion.
The Dash (11-10, 41-49) took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning against Myrtle Beach starter Chad Bell (4-0). With the game tied 2-2, Cleuluis Rondon reached on a two-out infield single. Jacob May walked and Keenyn Walker singled up the middle, scoring Rondon to put Winston-Salem in front at the time, 3-2.
Ryan Bores pitched four scoreless innings to sew up the win for Myrtle Beach, earning his first save of the season and the second of his career.
The Dash and Pelicans will wrap up the four-game series on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Terance Marin (2-0, 2.33 ERA) to the mound, while Myrtle Beach counters with lefty Martire Garcia (1-1, 0.87 ERA).
