Salem RidgeYaks News Release
The Salem Red Sox look to avoid dropping the series in game three of a four game set with the Keys. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
Setting the Table: Matty Johnson and Mike Miller have been the cata- lysts to the Sox offensive success of late. Johnson laced two triples yesterday, driving home three runs. The Sox lead off man has now hit in eight of his last nine games, a stretch where he's amassed a .364 average over his last nine games, with eight RBIs and ten runs scored. Mike Miller has been even hotter of late. The Sox number two hitter has hits in eight straight games. Miller holds a .552 aver- age over that stretch (16/29), including eight runs scored. Miller and Johnson are a combined 27 for their last 58, a combined .466 clip. Miller has reached base in 15 of the 17 games he's played in the second half, with Johnson reaching safely in 14 of 17 games.
Tavarez's Streak Continues: Aneury Tavarez went 2-5 last night, good enough to continue his hot hitting. Aneury now holds an nine game hit streak, and has hits in ten of eleven, holding a .400 average in his last ten (16/40). Tavarez has been hot for nearly five weeks now. Aneury's average hit a mid-season low .186 on June 1st. Since that point, he's hitting .328 (39/119), raising his season average to .251. This is not Tavarez's longest streak of the year, as the right fielder hit in a team season high 13 games from June 2nd to the 19th.
Production at the Bottom: The Sox got a huge day out of their eight and nine hole hitters last night. Jordan Weems and Jose Vinicio went five for ten last night, with a double, RBI, and scored three runs. The two had been a combined eight for 56 this season going into last night, a .143 clip. It was the first multi-hit game of the year for both Weems and Vinicio.
Offense Clicking: All this individual offensive production has led to quality offensive production in the month of July. The Sox have
hit .291 in seven games this month, the second best average in the circuit. Salem is averaging 5.3 runs and 9.9 hits a game in the July. For comparison's sake, Salem is averaging 4.9 runs and 8 hits a game in 87 games this season, holding a .253 team average.
Other Notable Nuggets: Jantzen Witte has hit in six straight games and nine of ten overall. He holds a .325 average in his last ten.
The Salem Sox are now just 17-36 when their starter goes less than six innings, while 25-9 when the starter goes six or more. Salem has seven of nine in games the starter goes less than six and won six straight when their starter goes six or more.
Salem's opponents have scored first in five straight games. In three of the five, Salem has trailed after the first inning. The Sox are just 14-31 when their opponent scores first, and 8-17 when the opponent leads after the first inning. Salem is 2-3 in this five game stretch.
Last night's ten inning affair marked the fourth time in nine games with Frederick the game did not finish in the regulation nine innings. Twice the games have gone to extras and twice it was stopped short by rain. It was the sixth time in 11 scheduled meetings the game was either delayed or postponed due to rain.
