WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers beefed up in the backfield with the selection of University of Ottawa Gee-Gees fullback Michael Shaver.

The Blue & Gold welcomed Shaver (6-2, 233, Ottawa '01, DOB: July 19, 1979) to the fold with their pick in the 3rd Round (26th Overall) in today's 2002 Canadian College Draft, which was held today via conference call from the CFL's head office in Toronto.

"He's a tough, hard-nosed player who is the prototypical fullback," said Brendan Taman, the club's vice-president of player personnel. "We fully expect that he will come in here and compete for a starting position."

Shaver is the brother of present-day Blue Bombers safety Lukas Shaver. He is an excellent blocker who can knock people around.

"I'm looking forward to being with the Blue Bombers," Shaver said. "It's a great atmosphere for football there and I can't wait to enjoy that experience. Being in Winnipeg and playing with my brother is an exciting thought. I'm overwhelmed being selected with Winnipeg's first pick."

Shaver could become the 3rd fullback drafted by Winnipeg to make the club. The last was Matt Pearce from the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds program. Present Blue Bombers fullback Wade Miller was also a draft choice of the football club, but he originally played linebacker at the time he was selected.

Shaver is also hoping to be the 7th Ottawa Gee-Gees player drafted to make the club. The last was defensive lineman Jean Daniel Roy, who played nine games for the club in 1998.

Shaver could also be the 14th person taken by Winnipeg in the 3rd Round to make it's the team. The most recent player from that round to successfully make the team was McGill University wide receiver Ben Wearing, who was a fixture on the club's practice roster in 2001.
