Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - Lloyd Orris - a solid fullback and talented long snapper - is now a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The 2001 East Division Champions got Orris (5-10, 200, Simon Fraser '01, DOB: April 18, 1980) with a selection in the 5th Round (40th Overall) of the 2002 Canadian College Draft, which was held today via conference call from the CFL's head office in Toronto.

Orris is a Winnipegger who most recently played college football for the Simon Fraser Clansmen. He has a family connection to the Blue Bombers, as his uncle Glen was a member of the football club in 1969 and 1970.

"It's a dream come true to come home and play in Winnipeg," said Orris. "I've been watching the Blue Bombers all my life and now to be selected by them is a dream come true."

Orris played high-school football at Kelvin High School under 2001 CFL/NFL Coach of the Year Paul Normandeau. Orris was part of a strong Clippers side that suffered an upset loss to the River East Kodiaks in the 1998 Winnipeg High School Football League Semifinals.

He was a high-school teammate of Manitoba Bisons linebacker Scott Coe, who was selected in today's draft by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 5th Round (43rd Overall).

Orris could become the 3rd fullback drafted by Winnipeg to make the club. The last was Matt Pearce from the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds program. Present Blue Bombers fullback Wade Miller was also a draft choice of the football club, but he originally played linebacker at the time he was selected.

Orris is hoping to be the 9th person drafted in the 5th Round to make the Big Blue. The last person chosen in that round to do so was offensive lineman Grant Everett, who was on Winnipeg's practice roster in the 2000 season.

Simon Fraser has been one of the best college programs to produce future Blue Bombers. A total of 10 players drafted from the school have played for Winnipeg. Orris could become the 11th and the first since defensive end Steve Grant made the club in 1991.
